Hi,
My Jayco rebuild is going along fine and the new kitchen area
has my DW excited about our first outing.

So now I have to make some kind of decision about where to put the
genset.

Somewhere into the space of the 5er or on the side of the tow rig under the flatbed.

Both places might have some advantage, but how much.

Any suggestions or preferences?

My "transfer switch" will most likly be a socket to plug in shore
power to wherever the old Onan goes.

If I use the 5th wheel, I will use a 6 gallon outboard motor gas tank
for fuel placed in an outside compartment, and a separate 12v start
battery.

If I use the tow rig, then I will be keeping all the gas powered stuff
away from the trailer, but will not be "self contained" when parked
away from the tow rig.

Also, I plan to tow "Rita," our 5er, with two different trucks and
would not have a genset with the other truck or need a second
generator.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

kentr

Remember that the gen requires a lot of airflow when operating.

The 89 Jayco we had the Onan was in the nose area with a vent in compartment door and the compartment floor was cut out between the frame rails. There was a 30amp plug in the pigtail storage area to plug into for gen power (CW had done the install for original owner).

If you are putting in a gen set in the trailer you really need to have a gen prep done. That means a box sealed from the interior of the trailer to prevent passage of CO and CO2 from the generator entering the coach.

Depending on how much power you intend to have available, a portable unit like the Honda or Yamaha might do the trick and be simpler / cheaper to deal with.

Hi,
Thanks Motor 31,
I have considered the coplications of an install
in the Jayco.

Have just bought/and passed on a 30' MH this last
week, stripping out many usefull things for out rebuild.

One of those things was the COMPLETE 4,000 watt gen set
with bay. I used a sawzall to cut out the bay from the frame of
the Winnie. I have the correct door, bottom, top and sides to
complete a proper generator bay prep. Would also install a "through
coach" exhaust, with proper consideration for heat.

I have also worked for RV manufacturerers and preped gen bays
for them.

Am confidant of installing safely, and would use the same recycled
bay if installed on the tow rig.

Also have torch set/ welder, saw at home to finish.

My install in the Jayco would be in the back left or right corner,
by moving the tub up, or relocating the water heater.

Did you like the '89 Jayco while you had it?
