I-10 Road Condition? |
|
|
| Hi folks- we've travelled across Canada and down the eastern seaboard. We're planning on heading west from Jacksonville to California on I-10. We're hauling a 30' fifth wheel. Someone told us to avoid the I-10 as it is made of concrete and the constant bumping will cause major damage to the 5th wheel. Can anyone tell us about the road conditions on the I-10 and what to avoid? Much appreciated. |

I've heard that I-10 in LA is/was bad, but I-10 in TX, NM, AZ and CA is fine. We've driven it many times pulling our fifth wheel without any major (or ANY) damage to the fifth wheel. _________________ LindaH

We have been on I-10 from California through Alabama. It's fine. The worst spot was in Louisiana but that is limited to about a 20-mile stretch on the western side of the state just inside the border. Louisiana used to be a lot worse a few years ago, but they did a great job on rebuilding the roadway except for that one area. Some friends of ours just got back from going from AZ to FL and back transporting an old 5er to family without any issues at all.
Other than that, I have found worse pavement in the north on several interstates. Our 5th wheels did not self-destruct from the road conditions. _________________ Mike, Nancy and the Fuzzies

Construction on I-10 in Houston is almost done...still a MAJOR pain in the a$$ during certain hours. Stay off it between 5 & 10 am, 12 & 2 pm, 4 & 7 pm. _________________ www.sheavanwinkle.pieraidrecords.com |

Oh, and around New Orleans, take I-12 (I think). It takes you just north of the city and you avoid hours of sitting in traffic time. _________________ www.sheavanwinkle.pieraidrecords.com |

| If you take I-12, you will avoid New Orleans altogether and go through Baton Rouge, and then get back to I-10. |

Your friend is correct about some sections of I-10. When I come to those sections, I travel in the hammer lane (the left lane) since it is less bumpy than the traveling lande (right lane) until I come to a section of blacktop, then I move over to the traveling lane.

I-10 to I-12 to I-10 to I-8 to San Diego |

We just drove west to east from San Diego to Jacksonville, Florida to Titusville, Florida in mid-October. The advice given was generally what I saw on the trip. The thoughts about bypassing New Orleans are good ones too. There is lots of traffic around that area as well as Houston. There were some short distances in which we drove in the passing lane because of the roughness in the drive lane. Not too bad though. It took me about 3.5 days to drive from El Paso to Titusville, Florida. We drive a 40' Phaeton motorhome.

| We just came through I-10 from I-55 (which was in awful shape) to I-12 (very busy through Baton Rouge) to I-10 which was in pretty good shape through to Lafayette where we are now. It was much worse last time we were on it. |

We've made this trip several times with no problems. (We bypass New Orleans using I-12). It's far better highway than most with very little cold weather damage that's found along I-40, I-90, etc. However, we traveled the Thomas E Dewey through New York once. Never again! It vibrated our RV so much, the roof air conditioner shifted; it was rough on our nerves, too.
Have a great trip! _________________ Cheryl Norman

Hi and thanks for the info. We may need it soon! Oh, and stay away from I-65 from Nashville, TN to Louisville, KY. HORRIBLE! It just about tore our fiver to bits! Dually also! And my nerves were definitely gone! We had to drive way below the speed limit to keep the RV and truck from being shaken to pieces. Jan _________________ ttt1943 |

| I have only traveled I-10 from Kerrvile, TX to Ozona, TX. Very good road. The Caverns of Sonora has a good campground. A tour of the Caverns would be a fun experience also. If you stay there, tell them their ranch foreman's "Mom" passed on the word of the good campground. |
