Trip Planning Map |
|

| I currently use a 1997 version of Road Trips' City to City by TravRoute for trip planning. It's great---I can enter trip origin and destination with intermediate cities along the way. It gives me mileage and travel times. I want an updated CD to include country and county roads. I only want it for my home computer, not for use in my RV. What are some of you folks using for your trip planning? |

| Microsoft's Streets & Trips will do the same; about $40. |

| Thanks to both of you! I'd been eye-balling that very program. I just have to make sure my computer will handle it and I'll get a copy. |

| I too used TravRoute (Door to Door) and loved it. But when it became so old that I had to update, I chose Delorme Street Atlas USA. It has many more features and functions than my old program and it is VERY difficult to use. I'm ready to bite the bullet and spend ANOTHER $40 to buy MS Streets and Trips! |

I am using a Tom Tom one XL GPS Reg $399. On closeout sale Office Depot, Amazon and others $157 to $149. Excellent turn-by-turn door-to-door and has voice giving directions as well as 4.3 inch display. I love it, especially in big cities with toll roads like Austin, Texas. 3 different settings: shortest route, fastest route, and alternate route. I made a wrong turn and it told me to turn around and go back. Got lost one time and punched in a saved favorite to Costco, and it gave me voice turn-by-turn directions from where I was right to Costco's front door.

I've been quite happy with the trip planner/mapping software that came with our Garmin. _________________ Norm & Janet

There is also a free option for folks on the internet. Go to Google maps. You can then plot your trip there for free and look at the routing. It's not much help while actually driving, but it will help plan the trip and you can look at the street situation at your destination as well before you even start the vehicle.
I used the satellite view to look at the type of road and terrain for a mountain trip last summer. _________________ Mike, Nancy and the Fuzzies

I finally decided to put my 2 cents in. What I have been using for planning my upcoming full-time road trip for the next couple of years is an old fashion fold-up map and Mapquest. http://www.mapquest.com/. First I look at the map and see where I may want to go, then I go to Mapquest, put in a start and finish location, zoom it in so I can get a good feel of what I will be passing by of interest, then I start scrolling along the route it has laid out. My first trip will be starting the day after Xmas. Just before I leave, I will hook the GPS up to my laptop and use a combination of both Delorme's program http://www.delorme.com and Streets and Trips. My laptop fits good in a location on the dash of my rig that when I look at it, the road is still within my field of vision and when I look at it, I still am seeing what is going on the road. I have a gaming mouse with lots of buttons that I programmed to certain tasks like zoom in and zoom out.

We use MS Streets & Trips. We like it so much that we gave it a name: Alice Faqaurwe. With the GPS plug-in and her talking to us, we've only gotten lost several times. It's not always her fault. Like telling us to make a turn onto a one-way street. Also with the GPS hook-up, you can get road construction updates. We've never used that function.
One of the best things I can say about the program is that it is cheap. If you don't like it, you won't feel you've wasted a bunch of green. It takes a little getting used to the extra things you can do with it, but that's part of the journey.
I use mine to pre-plan trips I want to make. When we went from the east coast to Quartzsite, AZ, we just punched those coordinates in, then added places we want to visit along the way. Our winter escape for 2008 -2009 was planned that way in mid-summer with constant adjustments in the route.
Of course as good as Alice might be, I sometimes have to flash a map in her face to let her know she is replaceable. _________________ Tripinon
