Is it doable? Are there any year-round RV parks?
We are thinking about heading south end of January but really don't want to do I-5.

Desertthorn, I've perused some websites and some of the Oregon Coast RV places have FANTASTIC cheap deals during winter. Kind of have to look for them. Nehalem State Park in Oregon is open year round and is right near the ocean. You have to have reservations for the "A" loop, which is right near the ocean; the rest of the loops you can just drive in. However, if you just drive in and there are spaces on the A loop, you may have to ask nicely if you can stay in the A loop because I've heard it depends on the host. Some hosts really enforce the "you have to have reservations" even if half the spaces in A loop are empty; some don't.

Also I found on websites, some of the more southern Oregon coast towns have cheap deals for winter RVing. Now as to the roads, I don't know about that.

Road conditions are generally OK. However, pay attention to weather forecasts. High winds can be an issue.

Thanks, guys. I won't be on any timetable so figure if the weather is bad, we can just hunker down in place until it passes. I am not a fan of driving in the wind so thanks for the info, George.
What websites, JJ?

Specific RV parks: the names right now escape me, SORRY! I just know I saw a great deal in one Oregon Coast city for winter camping, but on the other hand, I hadn't visited the parks personally that I saw, so who knows?

One park in Long Beach, WA (Sand Castle) is charging $20 a night for full hookup and WiFi as their "winter" rates. Great deal! I stayed there.

Hi,
I have used that route in winter to avoid the snow at the I-5 summit.

Have made many trips back to SF bay in the last 21 years since moving
here.

Just takes longer: 10 hours straight through on I-5 and 15 using 101.

Since you might not be driving straight through, that won't matter anyway.

Great scenery, less congestion, open spaces, lots of ocean views.

Mostly 2-lane, improved and widened, some stretches of twisty windy
and hilly connections to the more developed flatter stretches.

Lots to see.

We stayed at Beverly Beach State Park last January and it was $18 for full hookup with cable TV. I prepaid over the internet so I don't know if that made any difference. "A" loop is just a short walk from the beach where you can find a lot of fossils, and I'm not talking about RV people...lol Twisted Evil

Bandit, CABLE TV at a STATE PARK? You have got to be kidding! Also, I have noticed that Oregon state parks are cheaper than WA state parks.

LOL--if you're + 55 and have an Off Season Senior pass, the parks are cheaper in Washington as we only pay $6 a night, but that's for residents. Too bad you're such a kid. Rolling Eyes

Check out Midway RV Park in Coos Bay, 92478 Cape Arago Highway [Empire Blvd], 541-888-9300.

You have to leave 101 and drive over to the west side of Coos Bay - which isn't far and IS worth it! Easiest route is to use Newmark Ave from 101 over to Empire Blvd a.k.a. Cape Arago Highway (which, incidentally, takes you right by their Wal-Mart Supercenter. Additionally, Cape Arago State Park is only another 10-15 minutes from Midway).

Midway is really an outstanding facility; easy access; nicely decorated; well-maintained; dog-friendly (owners have one or several of their own). The owner and his wife live on-site; his staff are excellent; it's very secure; the restrooms are immaculate and beautifully decorated (including one with a large wheelchair-accessible shower) ... plus there's a "private" (close the door and [un]dress as you choose) ho'tub.

(There's also a super-duper Asian and American cuisine restaurant a few miles north in sister-town North Bend: name's Tai's Dynasty, 1388 Virginia St, 541-756-1322, open 6am to 9 or 10pm. It has a HUGE selection, very tasty meals, large portions, excellent service, reasonable prices - and a side/rear parking area we've always been able to swing into, even with our toad and 34' rig.)

55? Is that all? I will be 53 in two weeks! So I only have to wait two years to get a discount.

Thanks! Not looking forward to being 53, but I guess it beats the alternative.

Hope to shout, if you are anywhere near Coos Bay at Christmas time, check out Shore Acres State Park.

The Garden/arboretum is a leftover from the Simson timber estate--I think the name is right--and worth seeing on its own.

But at Christmas time, it's lit up like a 5-acre Christmas tree.

Might stay open until New Year's also.

They serve hot cider, nice gift shop--another state park camp close by.
