I know my day/night shades need to be cleaned, but I am afraid of making things worse. I vacuum them but I know they are still dirty. Any suggestions?

I have not tried it yet; however, I have been told by 3 or 4 people to remove the blinds and soak in warm water and a cup of Oxyclean. After soaking for a half hour or so, depending on how soiled, rinse and dry. Everyone said they came out bright and clean as new.

Thanks a bunch. That sounds easy enough. Now if I can find a container large enough to hold a shade...Laughing

I failed to mention that most of those who told me about this method used their bathtub.

That makes it tougher. I do not have a bathtub. Hmmm. Maybe I can borrow one.

How about a large (40-gallon) trash bag doubled and placed inside a trash can? That should be strong enough to hold the water and deep enough to soak your shades.

That sounds like it could work. Thanks for the suggestion.

When I steamed cleaned the carpet, upholstery, and ceiling as it is fabric like in my 2004 Bigfoot trailer, I also steam cleaned the day and night shades and they are perfect. No need to take them down at all. Easy solution as I have my own machine and used the upholstery attachment.

I like the idea of not taking them down.

Are you talking about the curtain kind or the plastic blinds?
I have the plastic ones. When I am on the road, I clean them with baby wipes. That does a really good job.

First you close them and wipe them down like cleaning a flat surface, and then you turn them the other way with the clean side towards the window, and again clean them like a flat surface.
You'll be surprised how dirty they are. Anyway, I found this a fast and good solution.

I don't know about cleaning them but when we recently bought our Holiday Rambler, we were told that if we have both shades closed (all the way down), we could spray the night shades with spray starch, then fold them all the way up to dry and do the same to the day shades. That will keep the pleats crisp and like new.

We just bought the motorhome in December so I haven't tried it yet. It sounds like a good idea though.

Good luck with the cleaning.

Jerry, I just tried this today, and it works! Very Happy
I had to clean some that were very brown from a smoker. Some did not come absolutely clean, but they are all light blue now.
Though on another forum it said that the 'night' part of day/night blinds is made of paper, so make sure what yours are made of before getting them wet.

Penny, thanks for the update! I have read quite a bit of day/night shade information and never heard anything about being made of paper. I did read somewhere that there were some cheaper 'knock-off' brands available and that may apply to them. Anyway, cleaning blinds is an upcoming project and I will find out!

Can anyone tell me if it is really necessary to keep day/night shades in the "up" position when not being used? We don't get to travel in the winter and I have heard that the shades should be kept up when not being used, and also when traveling as it will cause the pleats to become unfolded. Is this true?
Thanks.
