Only make reservations when we are on a strict schedule. Most of our RVing is to state parks, wilderness areas, state lakes or boondocking for hunting or fishing therefore it is usually first come, first served for the best camping areas. Vacations are NOT about having to be at a particular spot at a particular time. Of course, gas prices may change the carefree drive-as-you-will lifestyle. How sad.

Frequently call ahead about an hour (or less) just to see if they have a space. Is that a reservation?

Mostly show up. We do make reservations for holiday weekends or special occasions where we have to be in a specific area. We much prefer the spontanaety of being able to stop when we want and stay as long as we want and not have a deadline to go by.

With the high price of fuel, it should be even easier to find a RV park with out having a reservation. Never had any problems before the fuel crunch.

In California it is almost impossible to find a space in a State Park, in season, without a reservation.

When we began camping in the early 70s we seldom reserved a campsite because there were not that many people camping, but today DW insists that we have reservations wherever we go other than a state park occasionally.
