How do you force Google Maps to go the way you want?

Google Maps is navigating and telling you to go one way but you want to go a different way. What do you do?

For one thing, you should know that you don’t have to follow the directions Google Maps gives you. If you don’t follow it, it will follow you, and re-route accordingly … eventually.

If you want to use Google Maps and plan your route in advance, you just need to add a stop that forces the route to go the way you want. On the phone app for Google Maps, just do the following:

  1. Tap the 3-dot menu and “Add Stop”.
  2. Search for the place and select the place name as the stop.
  3. Drag the stop to the correct position in your route.

How do you change the direction your vehicle is going or pointing. Mine shows it is pointing north when traveling south?/

You don’t need to search for stops. Just drag anywhere on the route to your preferred road and the route will adjust as if your drag were a hard via. Internally it’s just creating an alternate route without an actual stop. If your device doesn’t drag, press and hold and select “add stop” in the balloon window instead of creating a pin.

Keep paper maps handy. When you do your google map planning check it for any route changes you want to make to get around a location and make a note of that. Do the turn and eventually the gps will catch up with you…after telling you make legal uturns for half an hour.

Google maps is really annoying when you have selected a gray alternative route, and then it keeps telling you it has found a shorter route (the blue one you rejected), and if you don’t immediately tap “no”, it changes to the route you first rejected. Then it keeps doing the same thing every 5 minutes.

I try to use Intersections to re-route Google maps and use as a VIA in my GPS instead of a stop. This keeps me from having to hit “Next stop” while driving.

How do you do that? Use as a VIA?

But then the map will send you through the absolute center of the town you added. Normally you just want to go near the town so you will have to adjust for that.
