Dog owners: Is/Are your dog(s) a purebred or mutt?

Okay, dog owners, this one is for you!

Is your dog or are your dogs purebred or a mutt?

Now, if you have a “designer dog breed,” we’re still considering that a purebred, not a mutt. Don’t know what a designer breed is? It means a dog has been bred, usually by a breeder, by two purebred dogs to create a new breed. Some of the most popular designer dog breeds are the doodles (Goldendoodle, Labradoodle, Cavapoo, Sheepadoodle, Yorkipoo, Maltipoo, Ausiedoodle, etc.), Chiweenies (Chihuahua and Dachshund), Puggle (Pug and Beagle), Pomski (Pomeranian and Husky), and many more.

After you vote, tell us what kind of dog you have in the comments. And if you have a mutt and want to know what breeds they are, we suggest doing this easy at-home DNA test. It’s fun!

We have a Chipitt and a Jack Russell/?? Beagle mix. Both are rescues. We were told that the Chipitt was a Chihuahua mix but the small town animal control officer didn’t have a clue what else he was.
Anyway, we wouldn’t trade him for anyone else.
The Jack Russell was badly abused and has issues but he’s a loving guy and we love him back.

Ours was a border collie. He did not travel with us; he was a farm dog who loved to run.

Sheltie, the 3rd one we have “owned”. Whom actually owns whom?

While both our dogs are rescues, my GSD is pure bred (at least a $1000- dog, who was abused and starving when I found him) while our Dutch Shepherd/Whippet mix had the Wisdom DNA panel guessing on about 40% or her lineage.

A Scotch Collie from a ranch in MT. AKC bred herding out of collies and ranchers went to Scotland to get purebred working dogs and started a new line in the US. And Sadie a terrier mix.

We wanted either a Labrador or a Weimaraner, both are hard to find litters. When we came across a papered Chocolate Lab male bred with a papered Weimaraner, we thought it was the best of both choices. Many weeks later we found out she was a “designer” breed.

To us, she’s just our Tilly girl. 6 1/2 months old (& 65lbs!) she’s almost ready for her first trip in the coach. Still working on the excited “hello” jumps – they are disconcerting at her size.

Our labradoodle is a rescue, $199 rehoming fee and she was spaded. She is priceless to us!

You made an error in your poll. “Designer” or “Doodle” dogs ARE mutts. 100% mutts. They are not one pure breed. You’ll need to try this again with three choices.

Our dogs have always been mutts. Always lovable and faithful. We lost Leah at 15 1/2 years old and we still miss her. She was a daschund mixed with a lot of other things. We rescued her the old fashioned way from the dog pound. We still have another dog named Caballo. He is nearing 14 and is a Shepard mix. He came to us via an illegal drug load near the Mexican border. Probably the most faithful dog we’ve ever had.

Both of our current dogs are purebred. We’ve had rescues before but we like ones bred for show. This isn’t because they look special but show breeds are bred for temperament as well. One of ours is an American Cooker, a breed that had issues with dogs being quick to bite caused by ‘inbreeding ” do to their popularity after the movie, “Lady and the Tramp” was released. Our other one is a Jack (Parsons) Russell Terrier. If you own a JRT you’ll understand. Rated number one among hyper breeds.

Sorry but a “designer breed” is not a purebred not matter how much they cost.

The definition is pure·bred:adjective: purebred (of an animal) bred from parents of the same breed or variety. noun: purebred; plural noun: purebreds; noun: pure-bred; plural noun: pure-breds an animal bred from parents of the same breed or variety.

Since “doodles” and the like are not of the same breed, they do not qualify as a purebred. They should be listed as a separate category.

My two dogs are purebreds, a lowchen and a Biewer Terrier. When you get a purebred from a responsible breeder you know what you are getting. Responsible breeders test their dogs, only breed dogs that do not pass on genetic diseases and have the expected temperaments. I have also owned rescue dogs, nothing wrong with them, but if you are looking for a dog that you know what you are getting, a purebred from a responsible breeder is the way to go. BTW, I also train and show dogs, have had the top performance dogs in both the bouvier and lowchen breeds. They were also breed champions.

Presently, I just have a senior Chihuahua. My Beagle/German Shepard mix passed a few years ago. My G/F has a Dachshund. They all like camping.
