This year saw access closed down at a popular Lake Ashtabula campground. West Ashtabula Crossing campground was originally designed for 1960s-era RVs, and offered no utility hookups. But the Army Corps of Engineers and hired contractors have changed that, and RVers can look for a new campground in 2024.
“A long time coming”
“It was a long time coming, but we finally received sustainability funding for upgrades in the West Crossing Campground,” said Scott Tichy, supervisory park ranger for the North Dakota Recreation and Natural Resources branch. “Over time, our users have changed the type of equipment they bring in and requirements needed, so it is important to accommodate those larger vehicles and trailers,” Tichy added.
RVers who come after the 2024 reopening will find upgraded electrical pedestals and water systems. The 38 RV sites have been lengthened, leveled, and widened to accommodate newer equipment.
Fishing opportunities at West Ashtabula Crossing campground
West Ashtabula Crossing is a major fishing attraction in the area. To that end, users will find a boat launch, dump station, fishing pier, fish cleaning station and picnic shelter. Got kids? A swimming beach and playground, as well as a restaurant, are less than a mile away. It’s a 15-mile drive to Valley City, the nearest town.
Sites can be reserved. Click here for more information.

Thank you, Russ and Tina! 🙂
Thanks for the report and looking forward to the newly revamped campsites.
Thank you for this timely update Russ-Tina! It will be a popular campground on Lake Ashtabula a lake created by the COE by damming the Sheyenne River which flows from Devils Lake thru Valley City to the Red River north of Fargo/Harwood ND. (There are three or four other campgrounds on the east side of the lake).
We camped there July 9 – 10, 2024 soon after the ‘NEW” campground opened.
The 2023 winning bid of $244,000 by AMC Construction Company of CALIFORNIA to upgrade NORTH DAKOTA’S West Ashtabula Crossing is a disappointment.
