The time is right. Right now, in fact! This week and next is the perfect time to witness Colorado’s annual show: wildflowers! Trust me, the scenes you’ll encounter are nothing short of magical.
A canvas of colors at high altitudes

Picture this: You’re hiking up a trail, the air crisp and cool, the sky a brilliant blue. As you climb higher, the landscape transforms into a living canvas, dotted with splashes of reds, purples, yellows, and blues. Wildflowers in Colorado’s high elevations are at their peak bloom right now, and it’s truly a sight to behold.
Best spots for wildflower viewing
Crested Butte. Known as the Wildflower Capital of Colorado, Crested Butte is a must-visit. The trails here are bursting with columbines, Indian paintbrushes, and lupines. The Gothic Road and Snodgrass Trail also offer stunning views.
Rocky Mountain National Park. This park is a treasure trove of wildflowers. Head to the higher elevations like Trail Ridge Road or the Alpine Visitor Center area. Here, you’ll find a variety of alpine flowers that seem to defy gravity, growing in the rocky, high-altitude terrain.
San Juan Mountains. The San Juans are not only breathtaking for their rugged beauty but also for their wildflower displays. Yankee Boy Basin near Ouray is a particularly famous spot, where the flowers bloom in abundance against the backdrop of dramatic peaks.
Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. One of the most photographed spots in Colorado, the Maroon Bells are stunning all on their own. Add a blanket of wildflowers to the scene, and it becomes a photographer’s dream. The Four Pass Loop offers an incredible variety of flowers along its path.
Tips for your wildflower adventure
- Go early. Wildflowers are best viewed in the morning light, which also makes for cooler, more pleasant hiking conditions.
- Stay on the trails. To preserve these beautiful ecosystems, make sure to stick to established trails. This prevents trampling and helps keep the flowers blooming year after year.
- Bring a camera. You’ll want to capture the beauty to remember long after your hike is over. A camera or even a good smartphone can help you take stunning shots of the flowers.
- Pack essentials. Water, snacks, sunscreen, and a hat are your best friends on these adventures. Higher elevations mean stronger sun and cooler temperatures, so be prepared. (Consider downloading a plant-identifying app like one of these to your cell phone.)
So, what are you waiting for? Lace up your hiking boots, grab your camera, and hit the trails in Colorado this week or next. The wildflowers are calling, and trust me, you don’t want to miss this beautiful, fleeting moment.

Thank you, Gail! 🙂 Great pictures! Enjoy! Thanks again, have a great weekend, safe travels, and safe stays! 🙂
