Do you own a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup with the 3.0L LM2 turbo-diesel Duramax? Does that dreaded Check Engine Light come on? Turns out, some who are experiencing this unwelcome phenomenon may have a faulty glow plug in the number two cylinder. If so, “The General” wants you to know they’ve got your back.
Technicians can sniff out GMC Sierra issue
GMC’s Special Coverage bulletin N232430460 indicates that a specific diagnostic trouble code will pop up if the rig has the bum glow plug. Affected trucks will be marked in the Applicable Warranties section found in the GM Global Warranty Management system. Running a diagnostic on the vehicle will also show the known diagnostic trouble code for the problem.
If a GMC technician identifies a bad-boy glow plug, then “replacement should be carried out.” It’s a job that takes 1 to 1.7 hours, including the diagnosis. Not only will the glow plug get a change-out but so, too, will the throttle body gasket. If your truck needs this service, GMC will cover reimbursement of “reasonable and customary expenses.” The fine print says the repairs MUST be done while the rig’s powertrain is still under warranty.
GMC extends the warranty for this issue to 15 years
The bulletin also notified of extended warranty coverage that applies only to this specific glow plug issue and replacement procedure. The extended coverage starts on January 29, 2024, and lasts for 15 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. The Duramax engine in the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 is ordinarily covered by a 5-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Thank you, Russ and Tina! Recalls, recalls, and more recalls. I guess it’s not just RVs, huh? Oh well. Thanks again! Safe travels! 🙂
I have a 2017 Chevy Duramax 6.6 and just had to replace three glow plugs. Cost me over $1,000 (CDN) at the dealer. I guess this year wasn’t covered?
Wow! Maybe you can get a refund from GMC? Probably wouldn’t hurt to try, anyway. Good luck! Have a great day, Leonard. 😀 –Diane at RVtravel.com
