Police release video of RV threat suspect takedown

Last month we reported on the terrified woman who called police to report that a man was threatening to burn her and her children while they sheltered in their RV. It was a peculiar situation, given that the suspect’s “weapon” turned out to be a cordless drill. Now Los Angeles police have released video of the RV threat suspect takedown.

July 4 incident frightening to all

The bizarre incident unfolded July 4, when a woman called for help. She told dispatchers her estranged husband was outside her motorhome, threatening to kill the family by burning down the rig. Security cam video shows the man starting a fire under the rig.

On arrival, police confronted Carlos Rangel, 34, who kept his hand near his waistband. Something was hidden under his shirt, and officers were rightly concerned that it might have been a weapon.

Making a long story short, Rangel refused to budge and get his hand away from that waistband. That was until he took several rounds of “less than lethal” convincing. Rangel ended up in the hospital, which prompted a special “use of force” investigation.

The agency has released a half-hour video that walks the public through the story, from the moment Rangel tries lighting a fire under his family’s RV, clear to his writhing on the ground after being subdued.

Video of RV threat suspect takedown is EXPLICIT

Fair warning! This video is explicit, both in the actual shooting and painful (but less than lethal) results, as well as EXPLICIT language that isn’t “bleeped out.” It’s not like anything you see on “cops and robbers” TV shows, but emphasizes how police do try to de-escalate violent situations. In this case, the RV threat suspect had plenty of warning.

Thank you, Russ and Tina! 🙂 Some people just will not listen and efforts to get their attention must escalate. I am glad that he was taken care of and that his wife and children were not harmed. Thanks again, have a great day, safe travels, and safe stays! 🙂

Humiliating to put on a body cam for someone charged with keeping the peace. A line from “A few good Men” comes to mind when Jessup tells the two sailors he can’t stand it when he’s asked to keep Git-Mo safe and then is challenged when questioned on how he does it.

I’d advise them to put on the badge and see how it’s done.

God bless those police officers and their patience with this criminal. There was no doubt about the criminal activity or the fact that he would not co-operate with police. It’s just a shame that these officers have to wear cameras to protect themselves against use of force claims.
Now comes the good part, he will go to jail, where he will get well fed, free health care, free dental care at tremendous cost to the people of his state. I read recently that it costs somewhere north of 100,000 dollars a year to keep a criminal in jail. Governments have no money, it is our money that goes to support all of the actions of a government.

IMO… he was a “suicide by police” candidate

It’s great that you’ve shared this video so a larger audience can see it. If you put yourself in the cops shoes, you know every one of them has a heart rate that’s through the roof because the guy is literally threatening to “kill them all”. In this case it looks like excellent training ruled the moment, instead of adrenaline fueled emotions. It’s a difficult, life threatening job that I couldn’t do. It doesn’t always go down this way, so God bless this crew for saving the wife and children in a super professional manner.
