After RV is stolen, insurance company cancels insurance

It’s a case of adding insult to injury, but this one could be the last straw for a great idea that helps kids. You Be You Early Learning (YbY) is a non-profit Colorado learning group that helps out kids in underserved communities in the Aurora area.

It was bad enough when the RV-based preschool’s rig was stolen. The YbY group got their RV back, then spent months cleansing it after crooks had used it for dope manufacturing. Just in time to roll out for the new school year, YbY’s insurance has been canceled.

“Joyride trickled down” and RV-based preschool insurance canceled

In an interview with CBS, Roya Brown, YbY’s Executive Director, was exuberant after the RV-based preschool’s mobile classroom was recovered.

“It took us a few days to recover the RV, but unfortunately, it was contaminated with drugs. It had to undergo extensive cleaning and repairs, which took about five months in total,” said Brown. “I never could have imagined how much that one joyride could have trickled down into this.”

After the cleanup, with only days before the start of mobile schooling, another blow. “Last week, we learned that our insurance policy was dropped, likely due to the theft. We were never notified, which is a legal obligation, and now we face the risk of operating without insurance.”

As RVers know, it’s critical to have a policy that covers auto-related issues. The school needs that, as well as general liability insurance. But the insurance cancellation doesn’t just create a bind for the RV schoolroom. There are two other mobile rigs YbY uses: a school bus and a trailer. Now all three rigs are insurance “bare.” Bottom line—no insurance, no school.

Students’ families react

How are the families of students reacting? CBS reports, “I cried when I heard the RV was stolen. I was shaking. Who would do this?” said Marceline Majaliwa, a YbY parent. “YbY has been huge in my child’s education. Without it, my options are very limited, and I’m worried about his development.”

The school is scrambling to get another policy. So far they’ve applied to two different insurance companies, but so far, no luck.

Staff hope kind-heartedness helps

Making things worse, the stolen RV had about $30,000 worth of schooling support gear that was not recovered when the rig was found. None of that was covered by insurance, and the school is simply stuck with replacing it on its own. Roya Brown says school staff are heartbroken—and hoping kind-hearted folks will reach out to help replace it.

While the RV-based preschool is working to resolve the insurance issues and get rolling again, they’re moving on a temporary alternative. Staff are putting together “activity packages,” with educational material for families to use at home. Of course, that won’t be like having a teacher and other kids right there, in your mobile classroom.

That’s a darn shame what their insurance company did to them. Let’s hope another insurance company, or even the state, steps in to help those good people out.

I would like to know the name of the insurance co. I may have a policy with them which I would be reviewing as renewal approaches!

I’m with you. Give us not only the name of the insurance company but its CEO also and let us drown him/her in negative emails and let him/her know what a dastardly thing they just did. Shame on them!!!

So what was the insurance company’s reason for cancelling?

This happens way too often. File a claim and the insurance company cancels you.
Not just one particular company, but a good many of them.

Thank you, Russ and Tina! 🙂 What was the reason the insurance gave for cancellation? Was the insurer aware of the extent to which it was used? Seems that there should be a reasonable reason somewhere. I wonder, too, where they are seeking insurance? I guess it not being used as an RV is working against them. Tragic confluence of events! 🤔😯🙁 Thanks again, have a great day, safe travels, and safe stays! 🙂
