Every year, as November rolls around, something magical happens in northern Indiana. The Shipshewana RV Campground transforms from a popular camping spot into a dazzling “Christmas Campground.” This two-mile-long drive-through display, known as “Lights of Joy,” creates a holiday experience filled with millions of twinkling lights, animatronics, and festive cheer.

What makes this Christmas campground so special?
Picture this: a regular RV campground turned into a glowing holiday wonderland. During the camping off-season, the Shipshewana RV Campground becomes a center of Christmas magic. Blanketed in millions of bright lights, it’s a sight to behold.
Whether you’re there to enjoy the stunning light displays or just soak in the festive atmosphere, it’s hard not to get caught up in the holiday spirit. From snow-covered trees illuminated with white lights to streets lit with greens and reds, it feels like stepping into a winter fairytale.
Hand warmers, horses, and holiday strolls
Our hosts stay warm and cozy during their visit with hand warmers, like the ones called “Hot Hands.” These small packets keep hands toasty as you walk around or admire the displays. You can even get warmers for your shoes if the chill is extra harsh.
And if walking isn’t your thing, there’s still plenty to enjoy while driving through the campground or the surrounding streets. Shipshewana offers more than just lights—you might even spot horse-drawn carriages, adding an old-fashioned charm that makes you feel like you’ve traveled back in time.
From campground to Christmas show
For those familiar with the Shipshewana RV Campground during camping season, the change is jaw-dropping. What once hosted RV camping, rallies, and get-togethers now becomes a festive light show. Electrical hookups transform into lighting setups, and empty fields turn into spots for breathtaking displays.
One of the best things about this experience? The festival keeps the spirit of camping alive, even in the winter. It’s like the park itself has found a second life during the holidays, all while welcoming back familiar faces who’ve camped there before.
When to visit
The “Lights of Joy” Christmas Campground opens its show each night at sunset. On weekdays, the lights shine until about 9 p.m., while weekends run later, until 10 p.m. These hours make it easy to fit the display into any evening plans, especially if you’re coming from out of town.
Want to make the most of the trip? Pack some snacks, maybe a thermos of hot cocoa, and get ready to take in the sights. And don’t forget to check the description for more details, including ticket info, directions, and other special events in Shipshewana.
The “Lights of Joy” experience is open through December 31, 2025 (closed on Christmas).
A fun experience for all ages
Whether you’re someone who loves the sparkle of Christmas lights or just looking for a way to embrace the holiday vibe, the Christmas Campground has something for everyone. There’s plenty to make you smile—whether it’s the “snow princess” feeling of the white lights, the humor of seeing green halos that remind you of (or perhaps turn you into…) the Grinch, or the joy of festive tunes filling the air.
For families, couples, or even solo adventurers, the experience blends nostalgia and wonder. The animatronics and light-covered trees are enough to make anyone feel like a kid again.
Final thoughts
If you’re ready to embrace the magic of the season, visiting Shipshewana’s Christmas Campground should be at the top of your list. It’s a perfect blend of simple fun, stunning visuals, and holiday spirit.
Mike and Jennifer Wendland, known for their RV lifestyle adventures, couldn’t recommend it more—and for good reason. So grab your loved ones, dress for the weather, and see the Christmas Campground. It’s the kind of memory you’ll want to make year after year.

I grew up in Washington DC 1950-56. The department stores decorated their windows for Xmas every year. We’d see things like singing choirboys, waving Santas, & electric trains in the windows. I asked DH if he had similar experiences & his parents would drive thru Palm Beach with him but never stop& walk. If you have children or grandkids take time to form wonderful memories with them Tomorrow is not a given
By accident, we stumbled across a campground that does a drive through Christmas lights display. And you can camp there while the display is happening! No, the vehicles do not go through the campground loop, they go around. And it’s over at 10pm. We reserved a site on our way back to Michigan, and had no idea it was something they did this time of year. Pretty unique stay and a nice surprise at Kentucky Horse Farm State Park. Check it out!
Thanks for the reminder. I live within driving distance of Shipshewana and have wanted to visit this light display for several years but the timing wasn’t convenient. I still have a few days to see if I can make this year. I wish they would keep it open through Jan 6th.
