As the New Year approaches, many RVers seek fresh ways to begin 2025 on a positive note. A wonderful tradition to consider is participating in a First Day Hike.
This is an initiative that encourages individuals and families to start the year with outdoor exercise and an appreciation for nature.
What are First Day Hikes?
First Day Hikes are guided walks held annually on January 1st in state parks across the United States.
Originating in Massachusetts in 1992, this program went nationwide in 2012 under the America’s State Parks alliance. The goal is to promote a healthy lifestyle by inviting people to explore the natural beauty and historical significance of state parks. In recent years, thousands have participated, collectively hiking hundreds of thousands of miles nationwide.
Why participate?
Starting the year with a hike offers numerous benefits:
- Health and wellness: Engaging in physical activity helps burn off holiday calories and sets a positive tone for the year ahead.
- Nature appreciation: Experience the serene beauty of winter landscapes, observe wildlife, and enjoy the tranquility of nature.
- Family friendly: These hikes are suitable for all ages, making them an excellent opportunity for family bonding.

Thank you, Gail! Not entirely sure, but seems none of the state parks in East Tennessee are sponsoring a hike. Still, will walk dog #3, so a bit of a hike. Happy new year and safe travels! 🙂
