Study says fresh air beats the gym for boosting mood and health

For RVers who spend long stretches on the road, taking a break for outdoor exercise can do more than stretch your legs—it can lift your mood, too. New research shows that workouts in natural settings—like forests, beaches, or parks—beat indoor gyms or city streets when it comes to reducing stress and boosting happiness.

Incorporating these activities into your routine is a simple way to follow RV health and wellness tips while enjoying the scenery at your next campground or scenic stop.

Study provides key RV health and wellness tips

A study in Psychology of Sport and Exercise tracked 25 young men as they walked at the same pace through three different environments: a natural area, an urban route, and an indoor gym. After each walk, researchers checked their mood, stress levels, and physical effort. Nature clearly came out on top.

Professor Stefano De Dominicis of the University of Copenhagen explained: “The participants felt significantly more relaxed and had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol after walking in nature. At the same time, they reported greater joy and less fatigue.”

Outdoor exercise left participants feeling energized, joyful, and optimistic, while negative emotions like boredom, anxiety, and irritation dropped. Boredom spiked indoors but faded outdoors. Even a short walk along a campground loop or a sunrise stroll by a lake offered big mood benefits—proof that RV life and fresh air go hand in hand, making these activities perfect RV health and wellness tips.

The study also found tangible physical benefits: Heart rates returned to normal faster after outdoor walks, and heart rate variability—which indicates calm and recovery—was 20% to 30% higher than indoor workouts.

Indoor workouts have their place

Indoor exercise still has perks, like team sports and gym chatter, but De Dominicis recommends mixing in outdoor activity. “The mental and physical benefits seem to be significantly greater when exercising in nature, so people can benefit greatly from replacing just one of their weekly indoor workouts with 30 minutes of exercise in green surroundings.”

For RVers, even a short hike at a scenic stop, a walk along a beach, or exploring trails near the campground can make staying active more fun, energizing, and mood-boosting. Following these simple routines is an easy way to apply RV health and wellness tips and enjoy both the journey and your destinations. “We see great potential in using nature as a driving force for physical activity—especially for those who find it difficult to get started,” De Dominicis said.
