10 awesome camping food ideas and tips

By Cheri Sicard
In the video below, we join Richie and Jaime from Where We Wild as they share their top 10 camping food hacks. You are bound to find something useful in this roundup of camping food tips.

#1 Pack your cooler in reverse: Packing the food for your last camping meal on the bottom and your first camping meal on top will allow you to reach the food without keeping the cooler open too long, or constantly having to dig through it.

#2 Frozen meat: Packing your cooler with frozen meat will not only help the meat last longer, but it will also help keep everything cold.

#3 Pre-chop your vegetables: This will save you time and cooking cleanup at camp.  You can prep ahead for whatever you plan to make and by having this often time-consuming work done ahead of time, throwing meals together is quick and easy. This technique will also help save space in your cooler or RV fridge.

#4 Eggs in a water bottle: For quick omelets ready to go, whisk up some eggs, pour them into a water bottle, and cap. When you are ready to cook, just shake and pour the contents into a hot pan. You can even make omelets with bits of meat and veggies in advance, then just cook at camp. You also won’t have to worry about broken eggs during travel.

#5 Frozen water bottles: Frozen water bottles are the best way to have ice, not to mention drinking water, in your cooler. It just makes sense. Watch the video to see how to pack your cooler with frozen water bottles.

#6 Pancake mix in a ketchup bottle: Mix up a batch of pancake batter and funnel it into a cleaned-out ketchup bottle. This saves you from carting pancake ingredients and having to mix up pancakes at camp. Just heat your griddle and squeeze out the batter for perfect pancakes.

#7 Cold brew coffee: Our hosts like to make coffee at home, chill it, and take it along in an insulated bottle, for great iced coffee on the go.

#8 Bring your cast iron to the table: After cooking, instead of plating everything, put down a trivet and bring the whole cast iron pan to the table and serve from there. It will keep your food warmer longer.

#9 Aluminum foil popcorn: You can make your own version of jiffy pop with some popcorn, oil, aluminum foil, and a campfire. Watch the video to learn how.

#10 Travel-sized spices and condiments: Our hosts like to use 7-day pill dispensers to make travel spice kits. Brilliant! Empty Tic Tac containers also make good travel spice containers. They use travel bottles for condiments, or my old trick of saving condiment packs from restaurants to outfit your RV kitchen.

This sounds more like tips for tent camping than RVing. But, I like the eggs in the bottle and the pancake mix in the ketchup bottle. They take up a lot of space but the convenience factor overrides it.

Thank you Cheri. We found a hack that is super convenient when you arrive at your destination.
We plug in our crockpot and cook while driving to the next destination. We also use the crockpot liners for easy clean up.
When you arrive, dinner is ready or real close depending on the drive.
