Wright Brothers National Memorial closed

The Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, NC, is closed today, Monday, September 30, 2024.

The closure will enable the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation into a single-engine airplane crash that occurred on September 28. Both the park and the First Flight Airstrip are scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, October 1, 2024. Regular hours will resume on that day, with the park open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Cause of closure

On Saturday, September 28, at around 5 p.m., a single-engine airplane crashed into the wooded area near the First Flight Airport at the memorial.

According to witnesses, the plane was attempting to land when it went down, resulting in a fire that consumed the aircraft. The fire was quickly handled by the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department, along with other local fire departments, but tragically, multiple fatalities have been confirmed.
