The Payson, Arizona, Town Council has voted unanimously to update its Unified Development Code to add RV park developments to the town’s industrial zoning.
The move opens more living options for employees, such as traveling nurses or journeymen construction workers, as well as visitors. “The town is trying to encourage tourism to boost revenue sales tax. That would allow for commercial developments to happen,” said Doni Wilbanks, Payson’s Community Development director. “This RV Park [across the street from the Payson airport] does align with the desire to support tourism as well as temporary living opportunities.”
Payson has a critical shortage of living spaces for necessary positions, such as police officers, firefighters, nurses, and teachers. Creating an RV park that allows for six-month stays would give those employees time to figure out a more long-term solution or complete their contract.
The move to change the code started when the owner of a piece of property across from the airport asked the town about developing an RV/travel trailer park on land zoned as industrial. Read the full story in the Payson Roundup.
