We tried new voice ChatGPT AI feature: Call a robot

Imagine picking up the phone and having a conversation with a robot that feels as natural as chatting with a friend. That’s the magic of ChatGPT, a sophisticated AI (artificial intelligence) that now offers the convenience of interaction via phone calls.

Whether you’re seeking advice, brainstorming ideas, or just curious about the potential of AI, this tech marvel is making communication more accessible than ever.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a conversational AI model developed by OpenAI. Originally designed for text-based communication, it can now engage with users via voice. This evolution brings a more human-like experience, allowing you to ask questions or hold discussions as you would with a real person.

How does it work over the phone?

ChatGPT’s voice integration relies on advanced speech-to-text and text-to-speech technologies. When you call in, your spoken words are converted into text that the AI processes. It then formulates a response and converts it back into speech. The result? A seamless back-and-forth exchange that feels intuitive and dynamic.

Why call a robot?

  • 24/7 availability: Need help at midnight? No problem. ChatGPT is always on.
  • Versatility: From helping you draft emails to solving math problems, its range of skills is impressive.
  • Non-judgmental: Feel free to ask any question, big or small. ChatGPT doesn’t judge—it’s there to assist.
  • Convenience: Talking is often faster than typing, making this option perfect for multitasking.

How to make the call

Beginning today, you can simply dial 1-800-242-8478. I tried it and here’s what happened. A friendly woman’s voice greeted me and asked how she might help me today. I asked for a Christmas dinner menu. Immediately the gal, er, robot described a detailed Christmas feast which included turkey, stuffing, and the works! She then asked, “How does that sound?”

Now I know I was talking to a robot, but I immediately answered, “That sounds yummy!” She was happy she was able to help and asked if I needed anything else. Then she said, “Goodbye.” I answered with my own farewell. Sheesh! It felt like a real conversation with an actual person! Kinda’ spooky and sort of great all at the same time.

Tips for a better experience

  • Be clear and concise: AI understands best when your questions or requests are straightforward.
Ask follow-up questions: If the answer isn’t clear, feel free to dive deeper—ChatGPT loves a good conversation.
Stay patient: While the technology is cutting-edge, it might occasionally ask for clarification.

The future of AI conversations

As technology advances, the gap between human and AI interaction continues to narrow. Voice-enabled AI like ChatGPT offers a glimpse into a future where robots might become an integral part of daily life—helping, entertaining, and perhaps even inspiring us.

So why not give it a try? The next time you’re curious about something or need assistance, pick up the phone and start talking. You might just find yourself amazed at how easy and enjoyable it is to converse with a robot.

EDITOR’S NOTE TO READERS: Do you agree or disagree that voice-enabled artificial intelligence like the author discusses here is a positive development in human communication?

Just last night I was watching the news and a female was doing the reporting on the story and when the camera was on her, it all sounded and looked fine. But when there was the camera footage with her talking in the background about the story, her voice was VERY mono-toned, precise and non human. My first thought was AI voice…

To me, this stuff is getting scary. Maybe I’m just getting too old to ‘appreciate’ this advancing technology. What is the point?

I’d have to agree with you, Tommy. AI seems to be advancing at breakneck speed. It scares me, too!

While this is not limited to artificial intelligence (some science-fiction writers call it ‘artificial stupid’), the biggest hurdle is for AI to recognize a legitimate exception to pre-determined decisions. To be fair, many call centers have the same problem – especially out of country contract call centers. A typical scenario may be directing the caller to a web site that is currently unavailable, or a web site that you have to contact the call center for that issue…

Cue the massive unemployment lines. The biggest threat to jobs or suppressing wages isn’t so much other humans or other countries, it’s the tech sectors rapid development of AI and robotics.
Comforting to know in light of the “tech bros” who now occupy an unofficial shadow cabinet or 4th branch of government.

Interesting article Gail. Is there a cost involved?

So far, it’s free. We’ll see if/how they eventually monetize it.

Many times this publication has rightfully alerted its readers to the potential inaccuracies of AI driven information.

Why would I call an AI voice line with a serious issue and expect to get valid results?

I guess I don’t have anything against this technology as it develops. It is proving to solve many problems in break neck speed; aside from the future unemployment created by replacing humans with computers….. Perhaps there should also be some rule or, heaven forbid – a new law, requiring computers (AI) to ID themselves as such. A disclosure statement …. and then there is the legal liability issue on the part of the computer… Hmmm – how do you litigate a suit with or against a computer??

Thank you, Gail! 🙂 I don’t think that I can remember the phone number. Also, I am not sufficiently comfortable with the technology to call. Happy new year and safe travels! 🙂
