Good Sam Club sues Gigi Stetler and RV Advisor

LINCOLNSHIRE, Ill. (March 16, 2021) — Good Sam Enterprises, LLC, an indirect subsidiary of Camping World Holdings, Inc., has filed a lawsuit against RV Advisor, LLC, and Gigi Stetler. The suit alleges trademark infringement, false advertising, unfair competition and deceptive trade practices.

Good Sam alleges that the defendants recently began infringing on the goodwill and trademarks of Good Sam by marketing its products and services under the GOOD SAMARITAN CLUB brand and making numerous false or misleading statements about Good Sam’s products and services.

“We believe this misinformation campaign fueled by RV Advisor and Gigi Stetler misleads our customers and the public by using our trademarks and making false, misleading and deceptive statements about our products and services,” said Tamara Ward, Chief Operating Officer of Camping World Holdings.

“We will not allow RV Advisor or Stetler to add legitimacy to the products and services they purport to offer and deceive and mislead the RV community by trading on the goodwill and trademarks established by Good Sam over the past 55 years.”

Ms. Ward added, “We will proactively and aggressively pursue our rights against any company that uses deceptive trade practices and attempts to trade on our name to provide legitimacy to their business. We’ve been cultivating our trademarks and concepts for over 55 years and will not tolerate any type of unlawful business activity to infringe on our rights.”

About Good Sam and the Good Sam Club

The Good Sam Club, with more than 2.1 million members, was founded in 1966 by Trail-R-News, a small California RV magazine. Members originally promised to help fellow travelers on America’s highways based on the biblical story principles of the Good Samaritan.

Interesting to note that the bad blood between the two started 10 years ago and is not the first lawsuit. Interesting story here:

In general, any case comes down to the similarities between the registered trademark and the alleged infringing name, the scope of goods or services, and how the two would be perceived by the paying customer, by the average joe on the street. Given that “good sam” is a derivative of “good samaritan”, much as one might not like it, they may well have a good case. If I were in their shoes, I’d take similar action.

RV Advisor / Stetler look as if they’re trying to combat this by filing their own TM application, filed just 2 weeks ago on March 8, 2021. Application for “RV Advisor Good Samaritan Club”

So this saga will run for a while yet.

Is RVAdvisor worth the membership? I abhor CW and anything they are attached to.

“Good Sam alleges that the defendants recently began infringing on the goodwill … of Good Sam”? I didn’t thing Good Sam had any “goodwill” left.

I never thought they had any to begin with!

A great follow up to this article would be a corresponding statement from Ms. Stetler on the lawsuit.

Finally CW cares about the “Good Sam Club”! Oh…wait, this is the club that CW allowed to “wither on the vine”, ending support for rallies, state clubs and the good works of those members. I guess CW is more concerned about their money maker rather than making a difference in the RV community.

I find it amusing that the accused probably drove away as many customers as they attracted if they are indeed guilty of copyright infringement.

I don’t even know if I’ve been deceived by “Good Sam” vs. “Good Samaritan”, since Im a past member I get junk email from at least one of them. Past experience with CW “service”, pricing, store inventory (or lack thereof), and past political statements by the founder cause me to avoid the place unless Im in a hurry and have no other choice.

I am certainly glad Campers Inn opened their parts store locally so I can go there now instead of CW.

Lemonis has had it in for her since she started her business…in my opinion BOYCOTT CW and GSC!

I would, won’t ever, set foot in a Camping World, nor ever be a Good Sam member. They are nothing but a money racket. I once walked around in a Camping World, and what I saw was extremely inflated prices, and a practice that was taking advantage of the retirees and their hard earned money. People, there are so many good, honest, reasonable rv shops out there who actually value your loyalty and business. If and when you find one of these great places to do business, share it with anyone that has an rv, so that everyone can start to once again enjoy being an rv owner.. put an end to this nightmare and abuse from these large money hungry chains!

This is a little off topic but in my area there are no rv shops with competent mechanics working there. (Well, there might be one or two but few people know where they are). Most of the reason for this is that the focus is on making money- as opposed to fixing the problem. That’s why we took our rig to a factory service center. Those people are truly wonderful. Pleasant, and concerned about fixing problems quickly while keeping you informed of their progress. Otherwise, I do all my own preventative maint and small repairs.

I wonder if Good Sam/ Camping world would be suing any other corporation, individual or non profit using this name. Seems Marcus can’t stand criticism, be it truthful or just opinion.
They cite goodwill and trademarks as the offending problem. This from a company that uses deceptive practices selling RV’s and services.

Trademark infringement can be easily proven. If you have visited her website in the past months before this surfaced it was obvious but today that stuff is gone….interesting

It would be nice to see in print what Gigi actually did to warrant allegations of “trademark infringement, false advertising, unfair competition and deceptive trade practices”. The article talks a lot but really says nothing. Is Camping Worlds “Good Sam Club” and the “Good Samaritan Club’ mention in the article one and the same?

I will check out the RV Advisor website. However Web, your comment about me “needing a hand to use the internet” only serves to demonstrate your foolish and unwarranted moral superiority since this is, after all, an online newsletter. How do you think I got here in the first place. P.S check your spelling, it’s not “yerself” it’s “yourself”.
