Highway Patrol officers rescue Bugs Bunny

I have driven in every state in the USA and it’s my opinion that the California Highway Patrol is the most aggressive state patrol at pursuing speeders and others who break the laws.

I have passed through many states without seeing a single state patrol car. That’s nearly impossible in California. They are everywhere, including in the sky where officers in small, high wing aircraft spy on motorists below, reporting speeders to officers on the ground.

But I will tell you this, and I bet you could say the same thing, “I have never seen a state patrol officer in pursuit of a giant rabbit.”

Well, it just happened, and it was California Highway Patrol officers who apprehended the creature, which I suspect must have been terribly confused.

It happened June 2 on state highway 17 near Santa Cruz after the CHP received a report from construction workers that the giant gray bunny was hopping along the highway close to traffic, which of course put both the rodent and motorists in danger.

Being experts at pursuing speeders, of which a rabbit can certainly be, the officers captured the rodent, which they by then had nicknamed Bugs, and took it into custody. (Bugs did not pose a threat so no handcuffs were required.) They transported Bugs to the veterinarians at Pacific & Santa Cruz Veterinary for treatment of injuries.

It was reported that the rabbit said, “What’s up, Doc?” when he/she/it encountered the first vet. (I made that up. Bad joke, huh?)

We assume the bunny made it. We hope so.

Thank you, Chuck! 🙂 I did not know that there are giant bunnies (aka Flemish rabbits). I am glad that it was safely removed from danger. Oddly enough Wikipedia indicates that this breed of bunny is raised for its fur and meat. Perhaps this particular one will escape the fate that apparently regularly befalls its relatives and can live out its days in a comfortable and safe estate. Thanks again, have a wonderful day, and SAFE travels! 🙂
