Idaho State Parks reservations shutting down

Looking to reserve a site in a Gem State campground? Reservations for 2025 camping will soon get tough. Idaho State Parks reservations will be effectively turned off on August 1. It’s not a permanent situation, but will be a major inconvenience for several months.

Idaho State Parks reservations shutting down for new system

Idaho State Parks reservations are being swapped over to a new system. On August 1, the plug will be pulled on the current system, and the new one won’t accept reservations until January 1.

Does this mean folks who’ve already put a reservation in place for next year are up the creek without a campsite? State park officials are quick to say, “No!” Reservations that are already in place are solid. Your place is safe.

What about reservations for the balance of this year? Evidently the “old system” will continue to process requests and keep them safe. What if you want to camp in an Idaho State Park in 2025, but haven’t settled on a date yet? If you figure your needs out before August 1, simply log onto the reservation system and make one. But when August 1 rolls around, you’ll have to wait until January 6, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. That’s when the new reservation system will open.

“A smooth transition”

A news release adds, “The blackout is necessary to migrate from the current reservation system to the new one, which requires the transfer of park facility and customer information from one network to another,” said Seth Hobbs, Reservation & Registration program manager for the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation.

“We apologize for the inconvenience, but the pause will allow us to make a smooth transition to the new reservation system, which is intended to provide a more user-friendly experience,” Hobbs said. “Customers will find easier navigation, better tools, and new functionality.”

Recapping: Idaho State Parks reservations shutting down on August 1. You can STILL put in reservations for 2024 after that, but no 2025 reservations can be made until next year.

Restarting reservations at a specific date and will not be a >”smooth transition” – it will create an artificial shortage and there will be a “gold rush” at that date and time as everyone tries to make a reservation. Better to have a graduated introduction over a period of time as the system becomes available, and this also allows for user testing to prevent problems and crashes.
