Kidde recalls 40 million fire extinguishers

November 2, 2017: United States Consumer Product Safety Commission:
Kidde Recalls Fire Extinguishers with Plastic Handles Due to Failure to Discharge and Nozzle Detachment: One Death Reported

This recall involves two styles of Kidde fire extinguishers: plastic handle fire extinguishers and push-button Pindicator fire extinguishers. The fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency. In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard.

If the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a fire.

Note: This recall includes fire extinguisher models that were previously recalled in March 2009 and February 2015. Kidde branded fire extinguishers included in these previously announced recalls should also be replaced.

Consumers should immediately contact Kidde to request a free replacement fire extinguisher and for instructions on returning the recalled unit, as it may not work properly in a fire emergency.

Consumers may call Kidde toll-free at 855-271-0773 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET Saturday and Sunday, or online at www.kidde.com and click on “Product Safety Recall” for more information.

Kidde’s recall number is 18-022.

I went to CPSC and Kidde sites re: this recall; checked home, car, and RV units against Kidde’s lists, and was immediatly confused.
Model #s I had were on second list, but had no date or date code.
Apparently this is a 100% recall of all Kiddes with plastic heads, but this is not spelled out anywhere.
A call to Kidde’s 855-271-0773 phone # confirmed that all 3 in question are involved, and are being replaced with metallic head extinguishers.

I have a total of 4 KIDDE Fire Extinguisher’s, 2 in my house and 2 in my RV. All were on the RECALL list. Contacted the KIDDE Recall Hotline and they are supposed to be sending out new ones with Metal Handles, instead of the Cheap Plastic Handles.

Thank You Kidde!
