Multi-use, transforming RV furniture

Do you remember the Transformers toys? I thought about the toys recently when I discovered several examples of transforming RV furniture.

Take a look, and you’ll see what I mean.

Hint: Always measure carefully to make sure a product will fit in your RV the way you intend. Be very cautious when mounting anything to RV walls and be prepared to substitute Command mounting hooks instead of long screws.

foldaway drying rack Amazon imageTransforming laundry rack

I really like this foldaway laundry rack. Like many foldaway RV helpers, the rack lies flat against the wall until you need it. When you’re ready to dry clothes, the two panels open to reveal fold-out drying racks. I prefer the rack that features knob-like hooks on the exterior. That way, the rack does double duty: It’s a place to hold hats or jackets as well as help with drying clothes on laundry day.

You can order this drying rack in sizes from 23 inches in length to 40 inches. Depending on how long your unit is will determine how much the rack will extend into your RV living area, so be sure to measure carefully.

When tucked away, the rack is just 4– to 5-inches thick, which makes it ideal for saving space! Many models carry 40–60 lb. capacity and include extra hooks for small items.

Transforming dining table

If you’ve removed your RV’s dinette, this next transforming item might be just what you need. This convertible dining table with drop leaves gives you flexible dining, work, or even prep space. Some multi-leaf units from makers like 3imothrix expand to seat 4 (roughly 52.7″ W × 31.5″ D × 29″ H fully open). Then the table folds down to a slim 7– to 8-inch thickness. I love that the table is on wheels. It’s easy to move just where you need it!

Typical retail pricing varies by finish and seller.

Transforming wall desk

This fold-down wall desk is perfect for turning a bunk area or galley wall into a workspace when needed. Common workable sizes for RV use are 23– to 40-inches wide and 12– to 24-inches deep when open. The table’s folded thickness is from 1.8– to 3.1-inches so the unit lies very close to the wall.

Use Command loop-and-hook holders on the wall or L-brackets to the floor for secure mounting.

transforming sleeper chair Amazon image

Transforming chair

This sleeper chair is perfect for the RVer who’s swapping out RV furniture or wanting an extra guest bed without a full couch. This particular model is sold on Amazon for $250 and comes in three different colors. This chair can transform to a chair with an ottoman to a recliner, to a bed. There’s even a flip-up side table with an integrated charging port!

Typical closed/chair footprints run around 36″W × 31″D × 34″H and open to a bed length roughly 70– to 71-inches long and 17 inches high. Look for sturdy, metal frames, breathable upholstery, and locking mechanisms that hold the chair safely while driving or when used as a bed.

Transforming coffee table

This lift-top table gives you a low-profile coffee table and an elevated work or dining table when needed. Compact lift-top models suitable for RVs typically run 31– to 44-inches long, 16– to 19.5-inches deep, and 15– to 18-inches tall when closed. The lifted height often reaches the low-20 inches, perfect for work or dining.

Hidden compartments and a split lift top let you store chargers and small items while gaining a stable workspace. Pricewise, reputable brand lift-top tables sell in the $100–$220 band, depending on size and finish.

How to choose

• Always consider weight. No matter what you add to your RV, you must keep within your rig’s cargo limits.

• Measure the storage spot and the clearance path first.

• For any wall-mount item, determine what fasteners will work best.

• For freestanding folding furniture, check the folded thickness and whether it can securely ride upright. Some units have wheel locking mechanisms while others may need to be secured in place on travel days (e.g., in the underbed storage space, or surrounded by boxes of supplies).

• Check the return policy and assembly requirements. (Some transforming pieces need two people to assemble or anchor properly.)

Great space savers Gail. Thanks. Love that chair bed idea! Save me a lot of walking to bed after my pre-bed nap!
