Have you lived in an RV for at least six months? We mean six months in a row, not split up over time.
If you answer yes, have you lived in your RV for six months at a time more than once? Or was it just a one-time thing?
Maybe you headed south for the winter and stayed for six months before heading back home. Or perhaps you’ve been on the road for a year or more. Some of you might be full-time RVers, living in your rig year-round.
Living in an RV for that long can give you a real sense of what it’s like to rely on the road for your home. It’s not just about finding the next campsite or scenic view—it’s about dealing with the day-to-day, whether that’s managing your water supply, keeping up with RV maintenance, or adapting to new places and routines.
After you respond to the poll, leave a comment about your experience. Did you face any challenges? How did you find the lifestyle? We’d like to hear your thoughts, whether it was a temporary situation or if RV living has become a long-term way of life for you.

We’ve been fulltime in an RV since 2014
20 years in. 5er or straight trailer. 4 trucks. All over the states and 3 times to Alaska.
That makes you a member of the Alcan club…welcome aboard.
We’ve been full timing for the second time for 5 years.
Just once since 2021 when I became a full timer. Loving every minute!
No, four months and that seemed long enough. I needed to stretch.
half-timer plus. Leaving the northern stix & brix in a couple hours for our 6-month migration south. This will be our 8th season.
Have a safe trip and a wonderful stay, Jim. 😀 –Diane at RVtravel.com
15 years travel nursing. This was the reason we bought the RV.
Three months in our back yard while our house was being remodeled. Parked trailer near septic tank and power pole and had a decent summer.
Sold the house & everything in it 15 years ago & have been travelling full time since then, over 200K miles. We cannot imagine any other lifestyle & plan to continue living in an rv until we’re forced to go into a nursing home.
Going on 3 years full-time in our Class A, Eleanor Rigsby.
Only once, after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. It’s been almost 20 years and I still have a vivid memory of ironing work clothes outside because there wasn’t enough room for the ironing board inside.
1,084 days full time. Please don’t make us live in a house again.
The survey doesn’t address the case where someone chooses to go “full time”. My wife and I have been “full timers” for over four years and continuously travel the country extensively. We average about 7.4 nights per stop. I responded “once” but it doesn’t reflect the true extent of our living choice. My Super Duty truck is towing our 42 foot fifth wheel 46% of the time. I have put 43,000 miles on our 5th wheel and a little over 93,000 miles on my truck in that period of time. We do not sit in one place very long.
We did it last year as snowbirds. We left PA in October and returned from our main stay in Florida. We’re retired, enjoyed it very much, but, we couldn’t wait to spread out in our sticks and bricks home!
Once about 7 months as followed my daughter hiking the Appalachian Trail. My “run aways” average 3 to 4 months.
Yes. Fulltime since September 2015. Same truck, same rv.
Yes, while building our new home on 11 acres.
Eight years full-timing and now part time. Six months in a house and six months in the RV.
3 1/2 years, volunteering in parks while following the sun.
Just once! Left the service in January, four of us in a small Winnebago Brave motor home; settled with a new job in September! That was enough for my lifetime.
Been living in 31 ft. Class C Jayco for 10 years now.
Sold the sticks and bricks June 2017…been in the 45ft fiver ever since traveling the US of A.
We sold our home in June 2018 and were full-time in our RV until May 2022. After COVID, wife wanted a homebase so we bought a home in Muskogee, OK. We still go to the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas from November to April.
We are in the motorhome about 6 months each winter as snowbirds. We like our seasonal site, but are always glad to get back home to lots more room in our house and having a garage for the vehicles too.
We are part time. Slowly increasing our trips as we venture further afield. Only once over 6m, so far…
We full-timed for almost 8 years (no other home), traveling the whole time…loved every moment! Have camped in all the lower 48 states and almost all of Canada, so beautiful!
While we took many month-long trips over the years, we had two separate long term stays in Houston for medical reasons. Once was nine months and the last one was a whole year! When we got back from that last yearlong stay, Wifey said she was going nowhere. She was right. The RV didn’t move for a year! Now we’re breaking back into RV’ing slowly, and the upcoming winter will help with the ‘slowly’ part.
The major issues we ran into were if a repair was needed we had to scramble to find a place to stay during repairs—once our 5th wheel had roof damage during summer hail storm in SD. The roof needed replacing and by the grace of God the company we chose to repair put us and our 2 dogs up in a camp trailer on their property for 5days while all repairs completed. ($20,000 bill to insurance)
We have lived in our Motorhome full-time for six years and travel extensively around the country. We also do Workamping in the winter months.
I’ve lived in my RV full-time for 7 years. Best decision I ever made.
If you include double wides, then we lived in 3 separate ones for a total time of about 3 years or so.
Coming up in six years as full time camp hosts. What started as a temporary option when our house sold faster than expected, it has turned into a wonderful minimalist life full of service to the community. Many communities, actually!
Spent 2 years (2017-2019) in a 28’ class c touring the west. We are Floridians. We had a marvelous time (even with a 4 month chemo/radiation stint in Tucson), and enjoyed every moment visiting new places and staying in unique areas.
I selected “Yes, many times” but that doesn’t really describe my situation. I’ve been living full time in an RV (2 motorhomes and 1 fifth wheel) since February 1992.
We alternate 3 to 4 months between the house and RV. The thought of spending more time in either just isn’t appealing at this stage of our lives.
Been living in my motorhome since 2004 – so yes longer than six months!
We lived in our rv for almost 2 years while we built our new house. The only problem we had was finding a campground for long periods. We ended up moving several times. Luckily we have several campgrounds in our area, Virginia Beach, VA, some are military which was a little cheaper. Once we got the land purchased and started building we were able to put up a pole barn with utilities and park the rv in there till the house was finished.
My old house sold much faster than I thought it would (in 4 days), but the new house was not finished. I was able to live in my RV on the 3-acre house property with water and electric. We bought a 300 gallon portable septic tank that we partially buried in the ground near the RV, and then had a service to come empty it as needed. Once the house was finished, we emptied the tank one last time and was able to sell it. Worked great, and living in my RV saved me a bunch of money. I lived in the RV for 8 months. Since then, I had an RV carport built with concrete foundation, so now it has a home, too.
Almost two years traveling around while I my home was being built. It took almost a year to finalize the property purchase since it was tied up in a trust where the lady didn’t realize she didn’t own the land and had given it to a stepdaughter before she died. Stepdaughter wasn’t even named as a beneficiary of the trust. It was a mess.
Glad I had the RV to live in/travel in.
Now 4 to 5 months at a time while visiting family.
Sold our house last May and have been full time since then. Prior to that we were motorhoming 8 to 10 months out of the year with several 5 to 6 month trips, plus several months working and spending only 1 night a week at home.
It’s been three years now fulltime living between two rv’s, upgrade to a larger travel trailer and can’t see going back to the traditional stick and brick cookie cutter, 30 year mortgage life sucking, HOA dictatorship life style!!!
I sold or gave away everything in July 2022. I’ve lived full time in a 13′ Scamp, traveling the country since. I see no plans on quitting any time soon.
Full time since 12/15. The house sold in 6/16. Started out full time in an orphan front engine diesel ’92 (’89 Oshkosh frame) 35′ Journey motorhome. Extremely challenging. Under powered, worst Allison transmission made. 4 speed, no lock up torque convertor, 5.9l ’88 Cummins marine engine, no exhaust brake, couldn’t buy one for it due to the tranny. 52k miles on it, sold it with 172k, replacement reman engine, 3rd trans, all new brake system. Sold for less than repairs (all done by myself) in 2017 after we bought our present ’04 Newmar, 40′ MADP that we currently live and travel in. 212k on this one now.
Biggest challenge was the first motorhome. New m/h 1/17, still traveling.
Enjoyed our new to us RoadTrek and traveling SO much we sold our home in late 2016 and officially went full time. We have thoroughly enjoyed our travels and our new lifestyle…it still remains fresh and new!
Since Nov 2008. April – August 2017 tent camped to Thunder Bay ON, Yukon, Devils Tower WY, and back to Illinois still in tent, saw eclipse in Carbondale, then September – October to New Orleans, Port Canaveral, Vicksburg MS, and back to Illinois.
Thank you, RV Travel! We stayed in our RV for 8 months while our retirement house was built in 2017. Aside from that, our 4-month trip to Alaska in 2018 is the longest we have lived in our RV. Have a great weekend and safe travels! 🙂
