Is it fair to say that social media has taken over the world? We think so. Your world? Maybe, maybe not, but certainly the majority of the world.
If you had to go a week without any access to social media, no Facebook, no Twitter, no Instagram, no nothin’, could you do it? Would it be easy for you? Hard for you? Could you do it but you wouldn’t want to?
After you vote, please feel free to explain your answer in the comments below. We’re curious to hear your thoughts. Just please keep them civil. Thanks, we appreciate it.
Social media is the root cause of many of the world’s problems. I wish it would all go away.
I feel great without the electronic addiction…camping is best without the distraction. Our society is horribly addicted to the electronic crack. watching people daily on the shuttle from the hospital to parking garage, very few people are interacting with anything but their phones, clicking several apps every minute and constantly checking in on their screens. Life is passing by these people who are so addicted to these phones…and yes , I have one but it is for my convenience for placing an emergency call but NO social media
Put a good fishing rod in my hand instead of a phone….
Only social media I have is Facebook, and I only check it once every 1 to 3 weeks. Never post just look to see if anyone posted anything of importance.
I have signed up only for RVTravel, I write people on email when needed. I have no smart phone. I order parts for things I am trying to repair. I’m not sure if I am social or not.
I think you’re social, Kelly. Probably more social than I am, in fact. And I’ve decided to call it “anti-social” media, referencing the psychological disorder that I think it is triggering in a lot of brainwashed people these days, unfortunately. Have a great day. 😀 –Diane at RVtravel.com
Oh My Gosh, Diane, If not brainwashed, certainly misled. You could, but I will not allow myself, to get started on that subject. Have a good night. Has gotten dark here so the dark is coming you way. My wife asks why I close the blinds at sunset. I think it is obvious — to keep the dark out, of course.
Very misled, I’d say. It’s still light here, but we might get snow tonight or tomorrow and then temps in the teens and 20s the next couple of nights. A little more winter to break up the monotony of our usual rainy weather, I guess. Have a warm and cozy (albeit dark) night, Kelly. 😀 –Diane
addiction Diane…these devices have altered social behaviors in a horrible way. If you observe the average “user”, the device is picked up several times per minute by the user at the cost of true human interactions. Most of the posted topics/ pictures lead the viewer to feel inadequate because the poster has such a better life/ better toys portrayed on the site. Truly sad generation(s) being damaged by these actions.
I agree with your observations, Scott. And it is very depressing, to say the least. Have a great day. 😀 –Diane at RVtravel.com
Wouldn’t care. Don’t have any of the Facebook,Twitter BS. ENJOY the peace and quiet. My best half and I enjoy each other’s company and don’t miss the drama. Camping is supposed to be down time from living life in the real world and we enjoy every precious second of the peaceful quiet that comes from our get away.
Commenting here is 100% as closest I get to or have ever been to social media.
Zero Twiiter, Truth, FB, Meta, none. Zero none. Wife either.
I would be cancelled for sure and that goes against my constitutionally protected speech if the internet is “The New Town Square”. If not, and they are all simply private companies, then repeal section 230 and stop protecting the facilitators of drug and human trafficking. I digress.
I think of social media as a way for people to Post their every thought and actions. Using the internet is not social media. For me I don’t want any part of it.
I have an account with many — Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. I don’t know the last time I used any of them.
I’m the same way as you. I don’t remember the last time I was on them either.
Maybe “social media” needs to be more defined. Is it just face book, twitter, tiktok, instagram, etc., Or does it include forums, podcasts, and the like? Since I’m not a millennial I don’t feel the need to be on social media to have a fulfilling existence.
While I do NOT have Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tik Tok, or whatever others like that are out there, I am a member of two forums that are of particular interest to me where I actually learn a lot and with decades of experience can also contribute. I have also saved a lot of money via the info I get. These aren’t gossip sites, rather they are specific to a certain hobby.
While I could certainly do without, I have used the info I get to better enjoy those hobbies and hopefully have done the same for others.
If you are on RV Travel, you are on a social media site.
10 years ago I was on Facebook and realizing I always arguing with former friends, over discussions that would never change either one of us. My always brilliant wife looked at me and said, are you really enjoying this, and I looked back and said no I’m not. I got off Facebook, and every other social media I could except for one which is still helpful for business. People say “you miss so much when you’re not on Facebook!”. I said maybe I do, but I’m also happier and I’m not having arguments and discussions that are going to result in nothing but grief!
I’ve never used social media of any kind. Just what am I missing out on by not using it? Absolutely nothing! Don’t need it, don’t want it.
Forums are a form of social media, so you are already using it…not just reading but actually participating!!! 🙂
It appears from some comments that some people think internet is social media. I can live with out social media but the internet is a different story, we stream everything and pay bills on the internet. Take social media, I don’t mind. But leave my internet alone!
While I would miss having any internet, I would be able to go without it as long as needed. However, I would dread finally returning and opening my inbox and having to go through hundreds of emails and junk to catch up.
I found that I could do without the internet when Apple put me in applejail because I forgot my signup password of 3 years ago. I couldn’t even get on anything for 10 days, 2 separate times of 5 days with a hour in between when I was trying to log back in, finally took the iPad to an Apple store and they reset it so I could get online but I still have a red flag for signing in, wouldn’t consider trying again. This is my last Apple.
How am I getting my RV Travel News? Carrier pigeon?
Internet? The updated version of the carrier pigeon. Have a great day, Skip. 😀 –Diane at RVtravel.com
When I got my first computer back in the last century(1999) my son says you need to get on face book, from the time he got me on it I thought this is no more than an electronic gossip fence, you just stay inside instead of leaning on the fence in the back yard. I don’t do it anymore, I never did twitter, and now we find that communist china is behind some of them so they’re out in my book. My step daughter is into crafts where she was making dolls that look like a real baby. She made a little boy that is the image of my oldest son when he was a baby, now you know what the Chinese do with the pics you take and send wirelessly over your phone. Yes your phone is a two way radio and the signal can and is monitored by someone. I worked with a man that had a monitor he bought at Radio Shack and we listened to cell phone conversations on our break. Very interesting.
I set my reminder for exactly 1 year of opening my Facebook account. When that 1 year alarm went off I stopped using It! Many people ask why and I tell them it’s the devil of the electronic world! If they want to communicate with me send an E-mail or text.
Doesn’t matter to me unless it is my Kids. They are No.#1 in their minds & yes; in mine 2
Social media has been destructive to society and interpersonal relationships. A high percentage of its content is conjecture, half truths or plain out wrong information. I can go a long, long time without social media and even internet. I only need internet for online banking, maybe once a week for 1/2 hour.
I can’t regulate the amount I use, so I’ve had to set it at zero. I still use the instant messaging apps to keep in touch with family.
