Say you stop at a rest area for a quick lunch and maybe a nap. When you arrive, you really have to use the bathroom. Do you head straight into your RV and use your own toilet, or do you take the opportunity to stretch your legs and use the clean rest area restroom?
Now, imagine you’re parked in town and grab lunch at a local diner. You finish your meal, and after a few cups of coffee and a glass of water, nature calls. Would you use the bathroom at the diner, or wait until you get back to your RV?
What about a visit to a public park? The park has restrooms nearby, but so does your rig. Which one wins?
How about when you’re boondocking near a trailhead or scenic overlook with a vault toilet nearby? Do you make the short hike over, or do you prefer the comfort (and privacy) of your own space?
Or picture this: You’re staying at a campground with sparkling clean restrooms and hot showers. Do you take advantage of the facilities, or is your RV bathroom your go-to no matter what?
You get the point… So now we want to know: Do you use your own RV toilet even when a clean restroom is close by?
As always, thanks for voting—and feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!

Getting up at night, I’d probably use the RV toilet; during the day, the campground restroom.
I am guessing the poll author meant during a travel day. I’m willing to bet motorcoach vs trailer makes a difference. We will often use the facilities available at a stop, but have on a number of occasions unlocked the trailer.
Maybe.
I will use the bathroom that is closest to me when I need to use it.
The joys of growing old…..
Depends if we are heading out or returning. Going out, I want the Maximum Tank Capacity available and returning, I know I will be dumping as soon as we pull into the driveway. At night we will always use the RV and also in wet weather.
We only use the RV toilet at night or bad weather
Depends on what I need to do do! Lol!
We camp in state parks almost exclusively. While traveling, if we need to go we’ll use the rv toilet since a lot of times it happens between towns. At the park itself we tend to use the park toilet unless it’s the middle of the night.
Isn’t the convenience of having a private toilet, one of the reasons for having a RV?
DW wouldn’t even THINK of using the public toilet. I would use public if possible, I’M the clean-out guy.
Having your own personal bathroom everywhere you go is one of the best features of the RV lifestyle.
My A-Frame has no toilet, and I would never want an RV with a toilet. Pit toilets don’t bother me at all. I have a bottle for middle of the night, and a luggable loo for boondocking.
All that said, I do admit that when reserve a campsite, I always try to get one near the restroom. 🙂
Saving capacity in the black tank is always a serous consideration. During daytime we use available (clean) facilities, but at night it’s a no-brainer to use our own. Who wants to get dressed, put on shoes and hike to the nearest facility, rather than a quick trip in-house and back to bed.
One of the first things we saw as an advantage when we bought our first motorhome was no longer needing to use rest stop restrooms. It was too much a hassle to unlock the trailers we had prior to this just to go to the bathroom. My wife even likes being able to use it when traveling down the highway. I can’t tell you the last time either of us used the campground restrooms.
It often depends on whether we’re boondocking or don’t have a sewer hookup vs. having a sewer hookup. We use our own bathroom more if we have a sewer hookup, less if we don’t.
In our RV, it’s the wife’s bathroom. I only use it in the middle of the night, and the shower only if the bathhouse is a long stroll away. I got the RV for her comfort.
Thank you for the question, RV Travel! As with most RVers, we go to the truck side at rest areas. My impression is that it usually is a long walk from that parking area to the rest rooms. I may walk around the RV and Jeep to see that they still are connected correctly and that all tires seem to be holding air, but usually I only use our bathroom and await the return of DW and dog #3 (who certainly went #1 and possibly also #2). At a park, probably use its rest room. Have a great day and safe travels!
No sewer hook-ups, the campground.
Otherwise, the camper, which is always cleaner.
That’s one of the reasons I bought a motorhome
The only reason to use the rv toilet is, I know who cleaned last!!!
Clean restroom??? lololololol
You got that right. They are Never as clean as the restroom in our motorhome!
Just about the only toilet I choose over my own is one at Buc-ee’s!
I’m old, very old. Expediency and therefore distance is major factor. Also, just as someone else mentioned, I know who cleaned our bathroom, before I get there.
Regarding the examples above, I would only use my restroom at the trailhead!! Otherwise I would use the clean and available restrooms/showers. Being full time, having the option of good water pressure and room to shave my legs is really pampering. That being said…having our own toilet is a different kind of pampering especially having to “go” at night and it’s two steps away!!
We’ll generally use a clean, public facility during the day when available. Less cleaning, less in the tank and can go longer between tank dumps. This helps to extend our length of stay when boondocking/dry camping.
Strange that the survey shows only 14-22% using the public restrooms, but most answers dispute that.
Hi, Bob. You need to take into account that there are 29 comments and 2,399 votes. Have a great day. 😀 –Diane at RVtravel.com
We use our trailer toilet for peeing only. In 9 years there’s only been three poops. They were the emergency outcome of Mexican food… 😀
We just bought a brand-new camper that has its own bathroom – you bet we’re going to use it! That was one reason we upgraded from a popup, so we’d have our own private bathroom…
