Summer is when RVers go camping and hiking, even less active ones. But whether you are a casual hiker or an end-to-end trail trekker, appropriate packing and clothing, along with knowledge of possible issues, can prevent difficulties with insects, weather and illness.
“‘Be prepared’ is the Boy Scout motto, and it is one of the best ways to avoid pitfalls and make the most of any hiking or camping trip,” said Dr. Jonathan Adams, a family medicine physician with Penn State Health Medical Group, reports Penn State News.
Check the weather report before leaving for your trip to help pack properly for the forecast. Learn about security at the campsite and hiking location, and make sure family and friends are aware of your plans.
Minimizing foodborne disease can keep everyone happy, such as packing each item in a tight, waterproof and insulated container. Keep raw foods separate from cooked items and store them at appropriate temperatures. Know what to do when toilets are not available, and bring a first-aid kit, map, sun hat, snacks and water. Wear long sleeve shirts and pants to keep insects at bay and use insect repellent.
