Take a quick trip to Germany with these hearty German recipes

Schnitzel or Jäger Schnitzel

by JoSele Swopes from Delta, CO

Tender and juicy, this schnitzel is German comfort food at its best. Once fried, the perfectly seasoned breading is crunchy and golden brown. With bacon drippings, onions, and mushrooms, the Jäger sauce is rich and creamy. It’s wonderful served over the pork chops and adds flavor to the meal. Serve with spaetzle or mashed potatoes for a comforting meal. Click here for the recipe.

Spaetzle

by Thea Pappalardo from Queens Village, NY

When cooking a German meal, this Spaetzle is a must-make side dish. Dropping the batter into the water with a small spoon produces little cloud-like dumplings. We opted to do the optional additional step of frying them with butter and highly suggest doing the same. They’re still soft and tender but the edges are buttery and crispy. Here’s the recipe.

German Potato Salad With Dill

by Kitchen Crew from Nashville, TN

Fresh dill and green onions brighten up the flavor of this German potato salad. Rather than mayonnaise, the warm potatoes are tossed in a sweet and tangy bacon vinaigrette and topped with fresh herbs. Serve this bright and cozy side dish alongside steak, chicken, pork chops, brisket, or ribs. Click here for the recipe.

German Sauerkraut & Bratwurst & Bacon Onion Potatoes

by Terrie Hoelscher from Harpers Ferry, WV

This German sauerkraut and bratwurst with bacon, onion, and potatoes is a fantastic traditional German meal. If you’ve had German food at an American restaurant, this is different than what you’re used to. This is like no sauerkraut we’ve had before. Cooking sauerkraut with onions and sweet apples is a lovely contrast in flavors. There’s a slight brine left that blends with the brown sugar, apples, and tangy beer. The brats are brown and crisp outside, soft and juicy inside. Once cooked in bacon, onions, and a sweet and tangy balsamic vinaigrette, they’re slightly caramelized and delicious. Combine all the elements when serving and this is a wonderful German meal. Here’s the recipe.

German Goulash

by Sandy Griffin from San Antonio, TX

Yum! This German goulash is comfort food at its best. This simple dinner is filled with rich and tender beef, red pepper and onions. The meat is cooked low and slow in a savory brown gravy that tenderizes the beef as it cooks. That makes the beef so succulent. If you don’t have spaetzle, egg noodles are delicious with this easy goulash recipe. Click here for the recipe.

German Kuchen

by Dorene Nagy from Wharncliffe, WV

All cultures have some type of sweet dough and this German Kuchen is a great example. Kuchen is the German word for cake. The dough is slightly sweet and fluffy. Tasty on its own. But the toppings are where this recipe gets fun. The cinnamon topping is classic and almost like a cinnamon streusel. If you love cherries, try the cherry toppings. It’s a wonderful complement to the bread.

We’ll admit that the butter topping had us confused. There’s no butter! Once baked, it sinks to the bottom creating a buttery custard. Simple and so good, the apple is a great topping for fall. The apples bake perfectly and are filled with cinnamon spice. The cheese topping is similar to the butter version where it sinks to the bottom while baking. If you asked us which is our favorite, we wouldn’t be able to single one out. They’re all good in their own way. Each recipe makes five Kuchen, so keep one or two for yourself and give some away to neighbors or family. Whichever Kuchen you choose to make, you’ll enjoy a bakery-quality treat. Here’s the recipe.
