RV shipments up for June, but motorhome numbers continue to fall

Results for the RV Industry Association’s (RVIA) June 2024 survey of manufacturers found that total RV shipments ended the month with 25,308 units, an increase of 5% compared to the 24,095 units shipped in June 2023.

That’s the good news. The bad news: shipments of motorhomes, with profits higher than towable recreational vehicles, continued to drop.

“RV shipments were up in June, with the greatest increase coming from travel trailer shipments that are up 19% for the year,” said RVIA President & CEO Craig Kirby, who tends to put a positive spin on all news, good or bad. “As consumers continue to look for affordable ways to vacation, RVs provide consumers with the freedom to travel while also controlling their costs and itineraries in a way that is easier than with traditional travel options.”

Towable RVs, led by conventional travel trailers, ended the month up 11.4% from last June with 23,020 shipments. Motorhomes finished the month down 33.2% compared to the same month last year with 2,288 units.

To date, RV shipments are up 8.4% compared to the same timeframe last year with 178,596 units shipped through June.

Park Model RVs, which represent a small segment of the RV industry, finished June down 13.8% compared to the same month last year, with 337 wholesale shipments.

So your most profitable segment of sales continue to go down. Even if the rest of your total sales increases the year end profit is actually less. How is that good news.

This may be good, my belief is that towables get better gas mileage from the tow vehicle than motorhomes get. Anything that uses less gas/diesel for the same effect (rving) is a good thing.

Under that theory, we should all be driving only very high milage small cars towing teardrop trailers that are essentially only a bed. Better yet, perhaps, a motorcycle with a small motorcycle popup trailer.
