RVers lost their home to wildfire, but reunited with lost dogs

Imagine being sound asleep in your rig. Suddenly there’s a pounding on your door, and shouts of “Fire!” It happened to a Crook County, Oregon, couple on Friday. They not only lost their RV to the fire, they also thought they’d lost two beloved pets—but there’s a happy ending. The wildfire destroyed the RVers’ home, but they have found their lost dogs.

RVers lost their home to wildfire—caused by reckless driver

It started Friday when authorities say a woman speeding down Oregon 126 near the county line with Deschutes lost a tire. Rather than stopping, the driver kept going, throwing sparks, causing a wildfire that consumed 10 acres and burned several RVs. One of those belonged to Jai Milner.

Milner told local news media NewsChannel 21, “We were woken up by pounding on the door, shouts of ‘fire!’ and had roughly 90 seconds to get everyone out.” Milner said they only had time to let their dogs out of their kennels, one of which, Tucker, they had to chase off because the confused animal kept trying to go back inside. In the heat of the emergency, and the nearing flames, Tucker and his pal, Faline, a dachshund, got lost.

Two pals missing, and an agonizing night

It must have been an agonizing night for the family. Their RV burned to the ground. Their dogs were missing, and one can only imagine how their thoughts about their fate traveled.

But the next day, firefighters said they’d seen both of the missing dogs. When afternoon rolled around, Jai says, “I had Faline the Ween in my arms.” By evening time, the couple went back to where their RV had been. There, waiting for them, was the missing Tucker.

Both dogs appear to be OK other than being tired out—and smoked up by their experiences. Tucker did sustain some small singe marks on his paws.

Multiple charges and jail for driver

The woman responsible for the fire? Police stopped her car as it neared Prineville. The driver was arrested and taken to the county jail. Authorities are now holding her without bail on six counts of reckless endangering, two counts of reckless burning, and reckless driving. More charges are pending.

I don’t care why, I don’t care where; don’t continue to drive, with the tire no longer there.

I thot it a bit clumsy, and now re-reading it, – “…when the tire is no longer there.”. should have been: “…with the tire no longer there.” I could have used an editor.

Thank you, Russ and Tina! 🙂 Sadly, I lack KellyR’s creativity. 🙁 However, I am pleased that the idiot was arrested. Hopefully her sentence will include incarceration in a cell kept at a temperature above 100° F, which is a pretty cool temperature for a fire. 🤔😉 Thanks again, have a great day, safe travels, and safe stays! 🙂

When our home burned (totaled) in 1989 we had to find a place for our dog, a small mutt, as we had to get an apartment. We left him with a farmer about 3 mi. from the fire. About a month later he disappeared from the farm – we finally found him sitting on the front step of the burned out house! He knew where “home” was supposed to be – and we would probably return to feed him! He was a good dog!
