Bear trapping to begin in Yellowstone National Park

Beginning August 22, researchers will be trapping both grizzly and black bears in Yellowstone National Park to gather data as part of their studies of the Yellowstone grizzly bear population. None of the traps will be set near trails or backcountry campsites and all will have warning signs alerting the public that the area is closed. Signs will be posted near access points for the specified areas. Backcountry users should heed the signs and stay clear of the area.

A teardrop manufacturer from Philadelphia has developed a new pull-behind that is cool-looking, lightweight, full of features, and can be built for less than $3,000. The basic ‘Sprig’ kit measures 4’x7′ fully built, is comprised of birch and stainless steel and weighs about 325 pounds. When completed, there will be sleeping quarters, a roof vent, opening windows, a three-inch foam mattress, a galley hatch, and a 900-pound gear-storage capacity. Buyers can upgrade the kit to be more livable; adding things like window screens, bicycle/kayak/cargo roof rack, stainless steel sink, two-burner stove, or an extra-wide upgrade for $500. The campaign is still in its kick-starter but is already 25 percent funded.
Homeless man on the move again after eviction from vacant Vernon lot

A homeless man was evicted from a vacant lot at the north end of Vernon, British Columbia where he, and others, have been camping. Workers installing a security fence around the property — the future site of a hotel —  were hired by the property owner, who had little choice after receiving a letter from the city warning of fines unless the property was cleaned up. She respects the city’s policies and says short of designating another area where homeless individuals can camp, there’s not much the municipality can do.

Though they’re all headed to the same place, the travelers are coming from all over – including halfway around the world. Local camping gear stores are selling out of tents, sleeping bags and other gear as tourists prepare for this once in a lifetime event.
City allows, sets rules for RV parks

Tremonton City, Utah, has approved plans for an RV park established on more than eight acres just north of Main Street. The new regulations allow for recreation amenities such as swimming pools, clubhouses, tennis courts and playgrounds. Campers with full and active sewer, water and electricity hookups, will be allowed to stay at the park up to 180 days in a given year, while the maximum stay for those with less than full hookups will be 90 days per year.
Watchdog calls for disclosure of RV park financial assessment

The Town of Oliver, BC, has been asked to disclose the financial assessment of Centennial RV Park based on a year-round operation. A 12-month operation would result in more financial benefits to the town than an 80-room hotel that is being proposed for the site. Officials question the long-term benefits of an 80-room hotel compared to a year-round municipal RV park. During a public hearing on the hotel rezoning, RV owners said they spend a significant amount of money in Oliver while staying in Centennial Park.
Whale stranded on Olympic National Park beach

Officials for Washington state’s Olympic National Park say a juvenile gray whale is stranded on a beach inside the park. The whale is believed to have become stranded in the Kalaloch area of the park. Response teams are providing supportive care as the whale is in poor condition. The teams sought to protect the whale from sunburn and scavengers and tried to keep the whale as wet as possible. The teams are working diligently, but have not yet been successful in returning the whale to the ocean.
