No RV oven? No problem! Bake on the stovetop

By Cheri Sicard

Does your RV lack an oven? No problem! In the video above, Robin Barrett of Creativity RV (one of the winners of our 2024 RV Video awards) shows us how to bake on the stovetop.  According to Robin, you can bake almost anything and everything on your RV’s stovetop.

For her first experiment on how to bake on the stovetop, Robin chose a rainy day to bake up a fresh batch of hot cornbread.

For simplicity’s sake, she used some Jiffy cornbread mix, but she dressed up the plain cornbread with some vegan chorizo sausage. She used a shelf-stable egg replacer in the recipe too, as this is great for boondockers. She baked it in a small aluminum loaf pan, but before she did, she had to fashion a stovetop oven in which to make it.

Watch the video to get a visual of how this all works.

You will need a large pot with a lid that has a steamer insert or some way to elevate a cooking surface from the direct heat of the bottom of the pot. Robin says you will always want to keep the flame low when baking on the stove. She wrapped the pan with the cornbread batter in foil and then covered the pot. What you are doing is trapping heat in the pot and turning it into a makeshift oven.

Preheating for about 5 minutes over a very low flame should get the stovetop “oven” hot enough to bake the cornbread.

After putting in the loaf pan and covering the pot, she allowed the cornbread to bake for about 20 minutes.

Besides cornbread, Robin has used this method to bake all kinds of things including muffins, pizza, biscuits, cookies, and enchiladas!

I love Robin and have learned SO much from her! In this case I much prefer my Omnia Oven to her method🙂👍

Thank you, Cheri! 🙂 That is an interesting and innovative way to create a variation similar to a Dutch oven. I guess a Dutch oven wouldn’t work because there’d be no heat applied to the sides and top, huh? Thanks again and safe travels! 🙂

We’ve baked on the stove top for camping for 25 years or more. The first oven we used is an Outback Oven. We never used it in the back country, but it worked just fine on our classic Coleman white gas stove.
When we did meals for group trips, we used the Coleman Camp Oven. We have a pizza stone to use in it to help even out the heat.
Now, we use an Omnia oven, we have both regular and ceramic non-stick pans in two sizes. We don’t bother with the various silicone liners they offer. We use them at home and in the trailer, as well as outside. One reason we bought it was so that we could bake inside in windy and bad weather.
