Are you spending the Thanksgiving holidays on the road this year? Don’t let that stop you from cooking your Thanksgiving turkey in an RV oven. Yes, this definitely can be done and the team from Irene Iron Travels shares their experiences after doing it for the first time.
It started with a little research and prep. Irene started by trying to determine if the job would take longer in the RV oven and other basic turkey roasting questions. She did this the night before but, ideally, you would determine these answers a little further in advance.
Instead of brining her turkey, Irene did what is known as a “dry brine.” That means she salted the turkey inside and out the night before. You can do this 24-48 hours ahead of time if you prefer. Doing the dry brine will allegedly result in a crispier skin on the finished turkey.
The next morning Irene created a compound butter based on a Gordon Ramsay recipe. She combined the butter with garlic, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Watch the video to see how to put this flavorful butter under the skin so that the turkey bastes in the butter as it roasts. Pay special attention to the breast meat, that tends to dry out.
She then filled the turkey with aromatic herbs, more garlic, onion, and lemon.
They cooked the bird in their friends’ large RV oven. To stabilize temperature, they put a pizza stone in the oven, something I personally always keep in mind, and they used an oven thermometer to monitor the temperature. She also used a meat thermometer to check the temperature of the turkey, which cooked quite a bit quicker than this group of friends anticipated. It did look delicious, though.

It looks perfect! I’d love to do this- thanks.
Don’t you get a lot of moisture on the windows the gas cooking?
Back a few decades, my dad’s house oven had died. I was living in a travel trailer nearby. I took a ruler to the store to find the shortest turkey I could find. Just before putting it in my 17′ trailer’s oven I cracked the ribs to make it about an inch shorter, so it just fit. Came out just fine in my tiny oven.
