In the video below we get a tour of the amazing free camping available at Buckhorn Camp in Florida’s Apalachicola National Forest. Like most videos from Living Our Dream Now (one of the winners of our 2024 RV video awards), Lou takes you through the campground so there will be no surprises and you will know what to expect in advance of visiting, especially handy for those in bigger rigs. In fact, Buckhorn Camp and the road in were both big rig friendly!
Once you leave the highway, expect about two miles of wide dirt road that winds through a beautiful pine scrub forest to get to the camp. Drive slowly and this is easy to navigate.
This is off-grid boondocking but in a beautiful spot in the forest. About the only extra amenity at the facilities was a large dumpster, so you will be able to dump trash.
The campground has no designated spots, but you will find a lot of choices in the large dispersed camping area. Despite the proliferation of trees, plenty of wide open space remains, so no problems getting big rigs in here.
This is a popular spot during deer hunting season. Judging by the comments in the YouTube video, the camp can get crowded and rowdy during those times. There is even a station on site for cleaning your game. However, it was quiet and serene when Lou and Melody visited.
What about bugs? This will likely vary depending on the time of year you visit. Lou and Melody were there in March and said they weren’t bad at all.
You can stay up to 14 days free at Buckhorn Campground in the Apalachicola National Forest.
