Where to ‘go’ when an RV has no bathroom?

By Cheri Sicard
Does your RV or car camping setup lack a toilet? Are you tired of midnight walks outdoors to do your business? In the video below, the team from Tent and Lantern Camping Life recommends three cheap and easy RV bathroom alternatives you can use to put an end to that.

Our hostess says that questions about where and how to go to the bathroom are the most frequent questions she gets from friends who want to try camping. This video should put those questions to rest.

She begins with the logical assumption that most beginner campers will go to some sort of campground, like at a state park, national forest, national park, etc. In places like this, finding a bathroom is no issue. Yes, you will have to walk to it, but it is always nearby. That said, part of the purpose of this video is to avoid those unscheduled late-night outdoor walks.

RV bathroom alternatives: Products to check out

#1 Toilet waste bags: The brand she recommends in the video no longer seems to exist, at least at Amazon, but there are comparable alternatives. Basically, this is a heavy-duty plastic bag inside of a heavy-duty zipper closure bag. You open the bag, optionally insert it into a bucket, squat over it, and do your business. Inside the bag is a powder that absorbs liquids, turns them into a gel, and deodorizes too. Tie up the bag, zipper the zip, and stash it away until the next use. Basic and brilliant!

#2 Folding toddler’s toilet: Our hostess has a smart albeit surprising solution for using the above bags—a folding toddler’s toilet! This neatly holds the bag and gives you something to perch on. It’s low, so you can even use it in an SUV, as head clearance is not an issue. And it folds away when not in use.

#3 Portable bidet: Who says RV bathroom alternatives have to be basic? A portable bidet will keep you clean while eliminating the need for toilet paper.

costs more, but I make good use Tushy’s travel bidet. The Tushy product was originally designed for backpackers. I put mine in my carry-on luggage for all travel, and use it in our smaller TT where we don’t have a bidet (I installed a bidet in our larger seasonal use TT). Frankly, I think the Tushy product would store better and be less likely to leak than the device in the article.

Thank you, Cheri! Informative information; thank you! Thankfully, we do have indoor plumbing and can “go” in the comfort of our RV. 🙂 Have a great weekend and safe travels!
