Wyoming rest stop parking to increase

Wyoming rest stop parking will get bigger in 2026—at least at Evanston. Wyoming’s Department of Transportation will be handed a $27 million federal grant it will use toward the construction of 365 big rig parking spaces at the I-80 rest area.

City leaders in nearby Evanston are thrilled with the prospect of more Wyoming rest stop parking. I-80 sees frequent weather closures, and when the available spaces in the rest stop fill up, the overflow rolls on into the city near the Wyoming/Utah border.

“This is a crucial project for Wyoming,” Governor Mark Gordon said in a statement. “It’s an investment in our road infrastructure that will help address pedestrian and vehicle safety hazards that occur when winter weather forces the closure of I-80. Importantly, it will alleviate the impacts to the community caused by hundreds of tractor-trailers seeking somewhere safe to park.”

RVers should benefit

While the principal focus of the additional parking areas is for commercial drivers, RVers with big motorhomes or those towing trailers will also benefit. However, to benefit truckers—and to keep them from heading into town—the local county senior citizen agency is also getting into the act. Its board says it will provide limited on-demand transit service to the truck parking areas, once constructed. The plan is to help manage truck congestion and help truck drivers reach critical services.

The Evanston rest area (mile marker 6) also has a public dump station. Many rest stops are closing their dump stations. Click here to read more.

I was parked overnight at this exit 6 rest area, & in the middle of the night a UPS truck scraped the back end of my RV, 33 ft motorhome, and the driver didn’t speak English, & wore a turban. Needless to say I never heard back from UPS even with photos of his driving license & photos of his truck license, & photos of the damage to my RV.
