Alliance RV fifth wheel trailers recalled: Overheated breaker could cause fire

An improperly wired breaker brings back Alliance travel trailers on recall. Alliance RV, LLC (Alliance) is recalling certain 2024 Avenue 22ML, 26RD, 29RL, 32RLS, 33RKS, 37MBR, and 38DBL fifth wheel trailers. The inverter circuit was improperly wired to a 30-amp breaker, which could allow the breaker to overheat. A breaker that overheats increases the risk of a fire. Potentially 235 units are affected.

Dealers will install a 20-amp breaker, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 28, 2024. Owners may contact Alliance customer service at 1-574-218-7165.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Additional background of interest

In its defect report to the NHTSA, Alliance made this self-effacing statement: “Understand that the component manufacturer of this breaker is not at fault for this error. The remedy is to replace the incorrectly sized 30 amp circuit breaker with a properly rated / sized 20 amp circuit breaker for the inverter circuit.” Kudos to Alliance!

Thank you, Russ and Tina! 🙂 Well, someone in the production line certainly screwed up. 🙁 Too bad that Alliance’s quality control folks did not catch this before the units shipped to dealers. Thanks again and safe travels! 🙂

You could really save a lot of time by replacing it yourself.- Not hard at all.

This makes no sense. I think they meant to say the wiring could possibly overheat. This could happen if you installed an oversized 30 amp breaker on a circuit rated for 20 amps maximum. If the 30 amp breaker would overheat on a 20 amp circuit you have some other serious problems.

One minor correction: Alliance Avenue models are 5th wheels, not travel trailers.

Stay safe, Joe

Thanks, Joe. I just looked up the documents filed on this matter at NHTSA. Alliance referred to the product as “trailers” but then NHTSA referred to them as “travel trailers.” I’ve changed the post to say “fifth wheel trailers.” That oughta cover it.😉 Have a good afternoon/evening. 😀 –Diane at RVtravel.com
