Why RV water heater maintenance is important

Prevents damage

Proper maintenance prevents corrosion and buildup, ensuring your water heater functions efficiently and lasts longer.

Ensures efficiency

Regular upkeep keeps your water heater running smoothly, providing hot water when you need it without overworking the system.

Saves money

Avoid costly repairs and replacements by taking care of your water heater with simple maintenance tasks.

Essential tips and tricks for maintaining your Atwood water heater

Use the correct drain plugs

Drain plugs are essential for draining the water heater tank during maintenance or winterization. Using the correct plug ensures a proper seal and prevents leaks.

Tip: Always use the manufacturer–recommended drain plug for your Atwood water heater. Avoid using makeshift plugs that may not fit correctly and could cause damage.

Here is the drain plug and wrench kit I recommend.

Importance of anode rods

Anode rods protect the water heater tank from corrosion by attracting corrosive elements in the water, thereby extending the tank’s lifespan.

Tip: Regularly check and replace the anode rod if it is significantly corroded. For Atwood water heaters, some models may not require an anode rod, so check your specific model’s manual.

Flushing the water heater tank

Flushing the tank removes sediment buildup that can cause inefficiency and damage to the heater.

Tip: At least once a year, drain the water heater completely and flush it with fresh water to remove any accumulated sediment.

Inspecting for leaks

Regular inspections help identify and address leaks early before they cause significant damage.

Tip: After draining and flushing, check all connections, fittings, and the tank itself for any signs of leaks. Tighten fittings as necessary and replace any damaged parts.

Temperature setting

Setting the correct temperature ensures safety and efficiency, preventing scalding and excessive energy use.

Tip: Set your water heater temperature to around 120° F (49° C) for optimal performance. This temperature is hot enough for practical use but not so high as to cause scalding or waste energy.

Winterizing your water heater

Winterizing protects your water heater from freezing temperatures, which can cause serious damage.

Tip: Drain the water heater completely and bypass it if you are using antifreeze in your RV’s water system during the winter months. This prevents any residual water from freezing and damaging the heater.

Maintenance is key!

Proper maintenance of your Atwood water heater is key to ensuring it operates efficiently and lasts for years. By following these simple tips and tricks, you can prevent damage, save money, and enjoy reliable hot water during your travels.

Dometic (who acquired Atwood) switched to a nylon cap rather than a plug. As the heater tank’s threads are now external rather than internal, I know of no anode rod or after-market electric rod that will attach to these tanks. The nylon caps are a bit pricey, but as far as I was concerned, worth purchasing a spare. They are not yet readily found, and if your cap is damaged you better have a heater by-pass installed or you won’t have water, let alone hot. Having a spare thermal link on hand is also smart.

Thank you, Dustin! Interesting. We lack a water heater, so this is quite educational. Happy new year and safe travels! 🙂
