An on-duty police officer in Grover Beach, California, saved a man from certain death when the latter’s fifth wheel caught fire. News trickled out after police released the bodycam video of the frightening incident that happened last Friday, December 27. The video of a man saved from a burning RV is enough to pause your thinking.
Officer’s heroic efforts saved a man from a burning RV
Officer Sam Castillo of the Grover Beach Police Department got the call Friday evening. The video from his body camera switched on, showing him pulling his response vehicle into the RV park where the fire broke out. He was quickly out on the pavement, asking neighbors if anyone was inside the flaming RV. They gave assurances there was someone inside, and Castillo didn’t hesitate.

Officer Castillo told local news media “I could hear the person screaming.” Flames were billowing out of the curbside of the rig. Castillo ran along the street side of the rig, calling to whoever was inside. He finally heard the man respond, and wielding what appears to be his baton, Sam Castillo broke out a window, and fought curtains to reach the fire victim. With the help of a neighbor, the two pulled the coughing man out of the window, carrying him away from the inferno.
Castillo related in a television interview, “He looked at us and said, ‘Man, I thought I was a goner. Thank you guys,’” Castillo said. “It feels good to know you helped someone, especially in an incident like this.”
On 12/27/2024, GBPD officers responded to a report of a trailer on fire. Once on scene, citizens advised there was someone inside the trailer. Our officer’s jumped into action to rescue a man trapped in his trailer as flames blocked his exit. Thanks to swift action by… pic.twitter.com/Qqv4RPq9I5

One neighbor who witnessed the flames and called 9-1-1 recalled hearing an eerie whistling sound above the crackling of the flames. It’s suggested that it was the sound of a propane cylinder pressure relief valve blasting off. Whether the cylinder was one on the outside of the rig isn’t known. It’s possible it was one inside, as the local fire authority says the fire was likely caused by a portable propane heater that was inside the rig.
Only minor physical injuries—but the memory will linger
The man saved from a burning RV suffered only minor injuries. For Officer Castillo, who suffered no physical injuries, there could be some other long-term issues. Recalling his adrenaline-fueled experience, Sam Castillo told reporters that hearing the victim cry out from inside that inferno made quite an impression. “That was in my mind for a little bit even after I got off that day.”

Wow, Scary situation ! Thankfully the fire didn’t spread to any of the other RVs parked so close next to it..
This guy is blessed to have been rescued by such an observant and brave officer !
Unbelievable to me that people are standing around in the RV Park, able to tell the officer “yes, there’s someone inside”, but it didn’t look like anyone had tried to help in any way. I hope I am wrong!
Forty (40) years of propaganda to these youngsters that the government will take care of everything… doesn’t surprise me one little… very sad…✨
Don’t see where it mentions the age of the neighbors standing outside. Can’t imagine a bunch of “youngsters” in an RV park. What an ugly assumption about a group of people. I don’t even need to know what you consider a “youngster.” Age, disability, shock and fear can freeze some people from responding as you believe they should have.
No, I think they were too busy uploading their vids of the inferno.
What a petty comment. Tell us, would you have stormed into the fire to help this person? Maybe throw a bottle of Perrier at the burning coach? It’s easy to pretend to be a hero when you’re sitting behind the keyboard. The bystanders did what they could. They called for qualified help and provided the relevant info to the officers.
Thank God for our brave and fast thinking police officers. All we ever get on the news is the few odd balls! I didn’t see this story of heroism on any news stations. Glad they were able to pull this gentleman out – appeared not to be hurt too badly. Looks like a lot of on-lookers, no thinkers or actors!!
Thank you, Russ and Tina! Wow! That was close! So glad the officer wasted no time upon his arrival and was able to extricate the RVer before the RVer expired. Great news! Happy new year and safe travels! 🙂
Those officers are truly heroes. No hesitation.
God bless you Officer Sam Castillo. I pray the man makes a full recovery 💙🇺🇸🚔🙏
