Campfire restrictions announced for Siuslaw National Forest

With the increasing heat and dryness that accompany summer in the West, forest managers are ramping up fire restrictions. On Friday officials of Oregon’s  Siuslaw National Forest enacted temporary fire restrictions within forest areas.

The restrictions prohibit fires outside of campfire rings in developed campgrounds and picnic areas. For a full list of where campfires are allowed, go here

Liquid gas stoves and lanterns may still be used. The restrictions are necessary for public safety and to protect forest health, said Dan Eddy, fire management officer for the Siuslaw National Forest. There were 10 large, active fires burning in Oregon as of Friday, according to forest officials.

Oregon Parks and Recreation officials began enforcing a campfire ban for all state parks on Thursday.

The Siuslaw restrictions include: no fires outside of designated campgrounds; no smoking except for within an enclosed car or at a developed recreation site; no generator use unless in an area without vegetation like a developed campsite or an enclosed building; and no motor vehicle use off of designated trails and roads.

Campfires in open sand while dispersed camping in the Oregon Dunes and Sand Lake Recreation Areas are allowed. Those areas remain open to motor vehicles.
