JOSHUA TREE, Calif. (Aug. 4, 2025) — The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for portions of southwest Arizona and southeastern California, including both east and west sections of Joshua Tree National Park. The warning is in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 6, through 8 p.m. Friday, August 8.
Daytime temperatures are expected to range from 106 to 118 degrees Fahrenheit, with a major heat risk forecast for affected areas. The park’s vast elevation range, from 536 feet in the southeast to 5,814 feet atop Quail Mountain, means conditions can vary significantly, but all visitors should be prepared for extreme heat.
Health officials urge the public to take precautions against heat-related illness, which can escalate from cramps and exhaustion to life-threatening heat stroke without proper care. Visitors are advised to limit outdoor activity to early morning or evening hours, wear lightweight clothing, and stay hydrated. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas for those working outdoors.
Cooling shelters may be available in some communities. Residents and visitors should contact county officials for local resources.
In addition to heat warnings, road, trail, campground, and backcountry zone closures may be in effect within the park. To stay informed, consult the current closures map available on the Joshua Tree National Park website.
Safety remains the responsibility of each visitor. Plan accordingly and remain alert to changing conditions.
