Keystone recalling Hideout and Springdale trailers for LP cylinder-related problem

A bum welding job on propane cylinder mounts has led to Keystone recalling nearly 2,000 travel trailers. Keystone RV Company (Keystone) is recalling certain 2024 Hideout 175BH, 177RD, 178RB, 179RB, 181BH, and 2024 Springdale 1700FQ, 1760 FQ, 1800BH, 1810BH, 1860SS, 2010BH travel trailers. The propane cylinder holder may have insufficient welds, allowing the propane cylinder to detach. A detached propane cylinder can become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash. 1,978 rigs could potentially be affected.

Remedy

Dealers will replace the holder, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed April 7, 2024. Owners may contact Keystone customer service at 1-866-425-4369. Keystone’s number for this recall is 24-451.

Background

On December 27, 2023, propane cylinder legs were reported to be coming apart. The company opened an investigation into the matter on January 31, 2024. They put the affected plant on hold and inspected the yard. On February 14, 2024, the company safety committee held a review of the known issues and voted unanimously to initiate a voluntary recall. The committee called for an investigation to determine how widespread the problem was. By the 16th of February, the investigation concluded and on February 19, Keystone filed the recall with NHTSA. Total time from initial problem report until NHTSA report filed, 62 days. Total days from initial problem report until owners notified, projected to be 110 days.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

That seems to be an awful lot of days to pass by from initial damage reports to owner notifications for such a dangerous safety failure…

Thank you, Russ and Tina! Well, I am glad that Forest River is not alone in taking responsibility for a problem. Stopping a production line seems expensive in terms of foregone sales, if not more, so I applaud their actions. I wonder if the delay in sending letters to affected owners is a federal deal, or merely a reflection of the time required to track down all affected owners? Either way, thank you and safe travels! 🙂

Keystone is off my list of manufacturers that I would buy from ever since I purchased a new Keystone Zeppelin. Keystone RVs and Keystone cops a coincidence and naming I don’t think so

Keystone should recall all their RV’s because they are pieces of junk. In addition to a multitude of other problems on my new 2022 Cougar TT, I’m told after owning the TT for 8 months, I need a new roof, and Keystone won’t replace it under warranty. NEVER buy a Keystone product.
