How to make more space in your RV bedroom

RV life is wonderful but has its challenges. One big challenge is living in a limited space. It seems our RV bedroom, in particular, quickly becomes cluttered. Here are some practical tips to find more space in your RV bedroom.

Shoes

A quick glance at our bedroom floor and you’d think a centipede lives here! So. Many. Shoes. One way to find more space in your RV bedroom is to corral all those shoes. This shoe storage system can hang over the back of your RV bedroom door. It’s sturdy, can hold up to 12 pairs of shoes, and best of all will help you reclaim floor space in your bedroom.

Bed

Believe it or not, your bed will still look welcoming without decorative pillows. Donate them or take them to your stix-n-brix home. Same goes for any other decorative bedding (e.g., throws, extra blankets), unless you use them nightly. In that case, remake the bed and include the extra blanket as you do so. Removing “eye clutter” will help make the bedroom space feel larger.

Nightstands

If your RV features nightstands, declutter them. Remove books and magazines you’ve finished, along with any piles of paperwork, etc. If your nightstand has a storage compartment, consider how you use the space. Would a small basket or two hold and better organize charging cords, RV manuals, and more?

If your RV bedroom lacks a nightstand and this results in piles of books, etc. stacked on the floor, consider adding a self-stick unit like this one. It can free up floor space and also provide a designated spot for a cell phone, iPad, glasses, and more.

TV

Every RV we’ve owned has featured a television in the bedroom. We never watch TV in bed, but it just recently occurred to me that we can find more space in our RV bedroom by removing the TV.

We plan to install floating shelves in its place. The shelves can provide space for much of the “stuff” that now rests atop the dresser. I’m talking about nighttime medicines, hand lotion, loose change, and other small items. Bonus: Without that huge black TV, I may even have wall space for artwork or framed photos.

Dresser

I’ve read quite a lot lately about folks removing their RV bedroom dresser to free up space in the bedroom. I was quite skeptical until I discovered these products:

Hanging organizer. This setup looks perfect for a weekend RV trip. Two or three folded tops and shorts will fit on the shelves, while underwear and socks can hang from hooks. (I know it seems strange to hang, rather than fold/stack undies. But, hey, no folding!) The organizer will hang nicely in our RV closet.

Dual-sided pocket organizer. I also think this organizer is promising. Its dual sides means double the storage. This will allow me to put my socks, underwear, etc., in the pockets on one side of the organizer, and my husband’s things in pockets on the other side. It would eliminate the need for a dresser because jeans and T-shirts can be stored on hangers or folded and placed on the existing closet shelves.

Hanging baskets. This is another clever idea for storage. In lieu of a dresser, small clothing items, like underwear, would easily store inside cloth baskets like these. I’d install one or two of this organizer set where the bedroom television was originally mounted.

Extra rolls of toilet paper takes up valuable space. Use both sides of the paper to avoid carrying extra rolls.

I clip ball caps and larger hats to a pant rack which I hang on the back of the bedroom door. You can also buy hat racks that hang on the door.

Thank you, Gail! 🙂 So many ideas. I can’t imagine none would work for most. As part-timers, we don’t take much more on a trip than we ultimately use. Our RV is pretty well designed in terms of inside storage, including night stands. Only one pair of shoes per person is allowed at the entrance. The closet floor easily accommodates the balance. Dog #3 is still boisterous, requiring a soft-sided crate. It stays beneath the dinette. We took the fixed chairs to the house and carry only two folding chairs. The chairs stay in the closet if not actually in use. Thanks again, have a great day, safe travels, and safe stays! 🙂

I put one of these in my bedroom closet and it holds a variety of items and keeps things off of the bottom of the closet. Comes in 3, 4 or 6 shelves.

Ya’ll obviously have a big RV. Our Airstream doesn’t have all that space for cabinets and walk in closets.
