Tips for RV camping at NASCAR races

The 2024 NASCAR season is well underway. This year’s race season first fired up its engines in February and will catch the final checkered flag in November. That means you still have several months to combine these two wildly popular passions: RVing and NASCAR.

If you love NASCAR and you love RVing as well, here are some tips for RVing at a NASCAR track.

Camping at NASCAR? Reserve early

It’s a good idea to make your RV reservations as soon as possible. RV sites for a NASCAR race can range in price from $75 (without hookups) to as much as $6,000 for premium slots with full amenities, track views, and closest-to-the-action sites.

Talk with RVers who have previously camped at a NASCAR event. They may offer tips about which RV sites are your best choices. When you book, ask about any special promotions, especially for children. You might score a deal!

Family friendly or party central?

NASCAR camping offers something for everyone. Some RV areas are designed for party-hearty fans. Organized facility tours, tailgate festivities, and music concerts are common in these areas.

NASCAR also warmly welcomes RVing families. If you book a family-friendly RV site, you can expect activities that will appeal to almost every age. Often quiet hours are extended, and kid-friendly activities like movie nights are presented. A NASCAR Kids Club membership is free to join and will keep your little race fans connected to NASCAR throughout the year.

In addition to RV campsites located within the infield, offsite camping is also available near most racing venues. Ask about these sites when you buy your NASCAR race tickets.

If you go

  • Savings. Camping at a NASCAR event can save you money. Not only will you avoid hefty hotel rates, but you can also make your snacks and meals right inside your RV rather than pay local restaurants.
  • Convenience. Camping at a NASCAR event means you can arrive early, sometimes as soon as the Monday or Tuesday of race week. By camping at NASCAR you can avoid the congested traffic that often happens on race day.
  • Pets. Many NASCAR RV camping areas are pet friendly, with some locations offering fenced dog parks on-site.
  • Meet the drivers. NASCAR RVing gives campers an opportunity to meet and greet race car drivers who choose to camp inside their own RVs within the raceway infield. Drivers will often provide time for a photo op or sign autographs for fans, too.

What to take camping at NASCAR

  • Weather considerations. If you think you will need to escape summer’s heat, consider how you will power your RV’s air conditioner while boondocking. Alternatively, you can locate cooling centers within the race facility ahead of time.
  • Sunblock. Pack clothing suitable for the predicted weather. Clothing with wicking properties will keep you cool during a hot, summer race. Bring sunblock, sunglasses, and a hat for protection as well. Some folks also pack along umbrellas—for shade and in case of rain.
  • Hydration. Keep your RV stocked with plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the event. Healthy snacks like fresh vegetables and fruit will also provide refreshment.
  • Camp chairs. Bring along comfortable camping chairs so that you can enjoy conversation camaraderie with other race fans.
  • Portable picnic table. If you prefer outdoor dining, pack your portable picnic table. It can also serve as a place to play cards or board games.
  • Indoor/outdoor games. If you enjoy corn hole or other outdoor games, bring them along. You may also want to pack some indoor activities with you, like hobbies, word puzzle books, or books to read.
  • Cash and/or camera. You’ll find many opportunities to purchase NASCAR merchandise at the raceway. If you prefer to save your cash, take photos instead. They can become treasured mementos of your NASCAR RVing experience, too.

Camping at NASCAR races is a ton of fun. We have camped for the Phoenix race many times and at Calif speedway when it was open. I would also suggest a bicycle. Came in key at Phoenix. As we could peddle up to the gates, lock our bikes to the fence, then ride on back to camp when the race was over. Most tracks have groceries stores on site and no they don’t jack the price point. A nascar keeps them in check. You meet some great people and it’s a bunch of fun. High recommend giving it a shot.

Thank you, Gail! 🙂 Camped? No. Attended once, sorta. 😉 A close friend of DW was legal counsel for Bristol (Tennessee) Motor Speedway for decades and gave DW a front row- (and suite-) view of the spring race one year. We had no RV yet, so we stayed at her house. A cousin did avail herself of DW’s “connection” and camped at the spring race. She and her hubby had a great time. Thanks again and safe travels! 🙂
