One of the biggest advantages of RVing is the freedom to go where you want—but sometimes Mother Nature has other plans. (And, well, full campgrounds, timed-entry… you know… all that other stuff, too.)
This week’s news has been filled with reminders of just how quickly conditions can change. Catastrophic flooding in Texas has inundated campgrounds and RV parks, while Missouri is still recovering from a once-in-a-thousand-year flood that stranded campers and triggered massive rescue efforts.
Elsewhere, wildfires have forced closures of recreation areas in multiple states, and wildfire smoke from Canada has made the air unhealthy across parts of the Midwest and Northeast. Add in hurricanes, tornadoes, and other severe weather, and it’s clear that flexibility is part of the RV lifestyle.
Many experienced RVers have had to leave a campground early, change routes, or even evacuate with little warning. While it’s never fun, it often makes for a memorable story—and probably even a valuable lesson.
So what about you? Have you ever had to evacuate a campground because of severe weather?
Tell us what happened in the comments below. We always enjoy reading your stories, and they may help fellow RVers prepare for the unexpected. Thank you!

We had to evacuate Ocean Lakes Family Campground in Myrtle Beach SC several years ago due to expected flooding from a hurricane. The campground did get flooding and had to close for a few days.
