Dash cameras used to be a pretty high-tech gadget that only a few had. Now, they’re pretty common for drivers, including RVers. Hey, if something happens to you while you’re driving, you’ll be incredibly thankful that you had footage to look at.
Some RVers say a dash cam saved them from paying for an accident they didn’t cause. Others use theirs to capture scenic drives or unexpected wildlife crossings. Either way, these little cameras can serve multiple purposes beyond just documenting accidents.
They’ve also become more affordable and easier to install. Many models offer features like GPS tracking, night vision, and even voice control. Some can even sync with your phone to store footage automatically.
Here’s more on why we believe all RVers (and drivers!) should have a dash cam.
Do you have a dash cam on either your RV or your tow vehicle? If you do, will you share which brand you have in the comments and whether you like (and recommend) it or not? It could be helpful for those looking to get one.
As always, Amazon has a huge selection and it looks like this one is the highest-rated.

It’s built in to my Garmin GPS. Last year I was behind a car that entered an intersection on a green light and was t-boned by a pickup. I showed the police the video, which clearly showed the green light, and the pickup driver was cited. I also have front and rear cameras in my wife’s car.
I have one in every vehicle I own. I heard a story where someone beat a ticket by using the video to prove the officer lied about them going left of the center line.
Mistaken, not lied. Lied implies intent.
I have dashcams in my pickup, car, and my classic car, with the cars having rear cameras, also. Shortly after I put a dashcam in the semi that I drove, it came into play when a car swerved over into my truck. She said that I swerved into her, so I said that when the police get there, I’ll show them the video. She then admitted that she came over into me. She decided to not try and lie to the police.
Yes and it paid for itself in Atlanta when a careless driver came across 2 lanes & ran his Uhaul trailer into my front bumper. The officer assigned 100% blame to the driver when he reviewed the playback. Worth every bit in having one
We installed a forward/rear camera about six months after getting our RV. It paid off a month later when a major accident occurred in front of us. We sent a copy of the video recording to the state police officer who was investigating the accident. I’ll try to send the video in a separate email.
Mine shows and records speed, time of day, direction and GPS coordinates.
Some of the newer ones also incorporate WIFI, so you can view and save the video on your phone, tablet or laptop.
Sure wish automakers would make these standard equipment like they did backup cameras.
Not only does the truck have a dash cam, the Haloview camera on the rear of the trailer also records everything.
We have a Rove R2 4K Dash Cam that I mounted on weighted dash pad that I can move from our car to our Motorhome, without the expense of a second camera. It does slide on the dash so I added the non-slip material for rugs and that fixed the problem.
I have two of those cameras mounted in our car. Simple to use and takes amazing videos.
One in the coach, one in the car and one on my motorcycle. Nowadays, you need cameras all around every vehicle that you own. So many people are liars these days. They see what local, state, and federal officials are doing these days and completely get away without any consequences. Great influencers they are!
Yes to both. Integrated into my Garmin.
I have a “Reload” brand in all three vehicles. Has front and rear cameras and split screen. It is set to come on when the ignition is turned on and off when the vehicle is shut off. I told my wife it will save us if the other driver is at fault and if it’s my fault smash the camera. Kidding.
We won’t leave the driveway without the dash cam rolling.
Thank you for the question, RV Travel. Yes, we have one on the dash of the RV. Would not think of foregoing one. I sit on the nose of 38,000 pounds towing another 5,200 pounds. People often do stupid things in order to avoid following our rig and the camera records each one against the possibility of one of them causing us to crash into them. Have a great day and safe travels!
I picked yes, but we don’t have one yet. We have an appointment this Thursday to get a new radio, dash cam & backup camera installed in our 2006 truck. Hopefully we love it, not loving the cost or the wait time but we are about to take off for 3-4 months so it is a needed expense!
Dashcam on all 3 vehicles. One is integrated in our Garmin RV GPS. Nice to have very accurate location and date/time data. Adding one to my Maverick that will be fully integrated into the vehicle, not a portable dash mount.
Need to add rear view on towd vehicle. Some people cut it too close.
