Washington, D.C. — New pet industry research from U.S. News & World Report’s 360 Reviews finds Chihuahuas (No. 1), French Bulldogs (No. 2) and Golden Retrievers (No. 3) to be the most popular dog breeds in the United States.
Dogs are the most popular pet, occupying 49 million households, according to the United States Census Bureau. And just because these friends are furry, it doesn’t make the love pet owners have for them any less than what they feel for human family members. In fact, The Pew Research Center found that 51% of pet owners view them in the same light as any human in the family.
The researchers in the 360 Reviews analyzed more than 811,000 data points for the “Most Popular Dog Breed in Each State” report.
“We analyzed a large database of dog breeds from across the U.S. to uncover the most popular dog breeds nationwide and in each state,” said Quiana Darden-King, U.S. News’ 360 Reviews senior insurance editor. “Americans’ favorite dogs are both big and small, with Chihuahuas and Shih Tzus making the top ten alongside German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers.”
Data highlights include:
- The most popular dog breed in the U.S., Chihuahuas, make up about 4% of dogs in the U.S.
- The South has a clear favorite dog breed — Chihuahuas; while the Upper Midwest and the Northeast favor Golden Retrievers.
- Golden Retrievers top the list in more than a quarter (26%) of states; in Vermont, they make up 6% of the state’s dog population.

Thank you, RV Travel! Weagle is none of them (i.e., 10 most-popular dog breeds). We figured he was a mutt when we picked him from among his brothers at the shelter. DW got a genetics test done on him and he is an Australian Shepherd (and nothing else). I don’t think he minds being outside the top-10, so long as he is fed and watered, and has a dry and comfortable place to sleep. 🙂
Not to mention loving parents. Very important. Have a good night, Neal. 😀 –Diane
We may approximate that. 😉 Thank you, Diane! I hope that you did, too, and have a wonderful weekend! 🙂
I’m sure you folks are great parents to Weagle.😻 (Pretend that’s Weagle looking at you. Can’t find a dog with heart eyes.🙄) Yes, I had a good night and am having a great weekend. Thanks! I hope you all have a great weekend, also. 😀 –Diane
Thank you, Diane! Excellent, I am glad that you did and are. 🙂 You’re very welcome, and we are, will. 🙂

Best breed of dogs are rescue, or stray, mutts.
I agree, MevetS. All of my dogs have been “mutts” from PAWS. They’re the best! They always show their appreciation for being rescued, especially if they had been in abusive situations previously.🥰 Have a great day. 😀 –Diane at RVtravel.com
The most popular breed,?
Rescue by far
That’s all I hear, “ its a rescue “
It’s like a breed in itself
Might look like a beagle or a poodle but it’s a rescue
Hi, Thomas. Yes, “rescue” is definitely a very popular breed. It’s also the most important “breed,” I think.👍 Have a great day. 😀 –Diane at RVtravel.com
Yep, we have three “rescues”, all 20 lbs or less. Our latest is a Shih Zhu 10+ year old male that was close to being euthanized. Now he is healthy and happy. They all love the RV camping life.
