Same problem, different cause: Forest River recall – LP cylinder could detach

Last week Forest River issued a recall for more than 800 RVs because a bad mounting bracket could cause LP tanks to fall off. Now there are more Forest River LP tank problems. Like your daddy used to say, “Same song, second verse,” as this week, more falling tanks—from a different cause—are bringing more Forest River rigs back in a recall.

Forest River, Inc. (Forest River) is recalling certain 2025 RPOD RPT197 and RPT205 travel trailers. The propane tank tray may be missing the required number of fasteners, allowing the tanks to detach. A detached tank can become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash. Potentially 116 travel trailers are affected.

Remedy for Forest River LP tank problems

Owners are advised to remove the tanks until the repair is performed. Dealers will install the correct number of fasteners, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed January 22, 2025. Owners may contact Forest River customer service at 1-574-642-3119. Forest River’s number for this recall is 80-1877.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or go to nhtsa.gov.

What happened this time?

In the last batch of recalls, LP tank support brackets, produced by a vendor for Forest River, had poor welds. The welds could break. This time, Forest River has itself to blame for the blunder.

Evidently, when these particular travel trailer models were originally produced, they came equipped with a single LP bottle. Forest River made a production change, increasing the number of cylinders to two. Trouble is, two cylinders equals twice the weight. More weight means a need for beefed-up support by increasing the number of fasteners used to hold things in place.

To quote a company report to NHTSA, “On December 10, 2024, during a routine Forest River Pre Delivery Inspection (“PDI”) it was discovered that the LP Tray did not have the appropriate amount of fasteners attaching it to the chassis.” Oops.

Russ and Tiña went from childhood tent camping to RVing in the 1980s when the ground got too hard. They've been tutored in the ways of RVing (and RV repair) by a series of rigs, from truck campers, to a fifth-wheel, and several travel trailers. In addition to writing scores of articles on RVing topics, they've also taught college classes for folks new to RVing. They authored the book, RV Boondocking Basics.

I wouldn’t mind paying more for an RV that was quality. It’s a shame the big manufacturers insist on turning out complete garbage. Year after year

Thank you, Russ and Tina! 🙂 Given the number of Forest River recalls each month, making fun of them has lost its charm, replaced by growing contempt tinged with sadness. I also wonder how they continue to sell RVs. Happy new year and safe travels!
